President Jacob Zuma, Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane, and government should be commended for acting against drug abuse, the African National Congress said on Thursday.
In the 30 days since Eldorado Park residents asked Zuma to intervene, government had been "unrelenting" in fighting drug abuse, spokesman Jackson Mthembu said.
"The ANC welcomes the decisive interventions to date, including the closing down of drug dens, the so-called 'lolly lounges', and the arrests of drug peddlers."
Police said on June 2 that a clean-up of Eldorado Park in southern Johannesburg had resulted in at least 350 arrests in three weeks.
"Since the start of the operation [on May 14] it was indicated to the community that the police cannot do this alone. We need assistance in the form of information from the community to act on," Gauteng police commissioner Lt-Gen Mzwandile Petros said in a statement.
The arrests included 133 for drug-related crimes, 50 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and 56 for common assault.
Mthembu said more needed to be done in other parts of the country.
"No one [in] society can be a spectator to this problem. Drugs are an evil that is destroying the youth of this country and must be rooted out..." he said.
