Pretoria - The Tshwane local government election battle has heated up, with revelations from whistleblower website WikiLeaks that the ANC is nervous the DA's "day dreams" will be realised in the metro.

The DA on Tuesday said this confirms the ANC's fears in the capital.

According to a WikiLeaks cable which emerged last month, the ANC's Gauteng spokesperson Dumisa Ntuli told an American diplomat that the ANC was bothered that it could possibly lose Tshwane to the DA.

Ntuli apparently said in the conversation on September 30, 2009 that the ANC had "big internal problems in Tshwane".

Nightmare

The DA on Tuesday reacted to the ANC Tshwane region's comment that the DA's "day dreaming about Tshwane is going to change into a nightmare" in the municipal elections.

According to the cable, Ntuli indicated the problems in Tshwane could be attributed to ANC infighting to get control over the metro council.

Former municipal manager of Tshwane, Kiba Kekana, was "provisionally suspended" a month after Ntuli's alleged conversation. Kekana left at the end of last year with a golden handshake after a long suspension.

Former executive Tshwane mayor Dr Gwen Ramokgopa was redeployed in November last year after endless rumours that she had fallen into disfavour in local ANC circles.

Meanwhile, Ntuli has denied the conversation. "I never said that... I can't comment on something I never said."

Voters tired

DA MP Fred Nel said the DA was confident that it could win Tshwane.

He said the ANC - as could clearly be seen in the Ntuli conversation - had more than enough reason to be worried.

"Voters in Tshwane are tired of poor governing, arrogant leaders and patchy service delivery."

There is still no sign of the ANC's list of candidates for Tshwane. A source in the ANC told Beeld confidentially on Tuesday that a few "touchy issues" still had to be dealt with before it could be revealed.

Ntuli said on Tuesday the ANC would reveal it next week.

You can't blanket it like that, there will most prob always be no matter who is in power. It's just so little when compared to the ANC that it looks like there is none :p

But I do hope DA take this one..

Completely agree. just letting the DA know I wont tolerate it from the ANC and I most definitely wont tolerate it from them if they win.
 
My wife will be driving from Mpumalanga to vote in our old voting district - PTA!!!

And she won't be voting AN€, that much is sure enough...

The DA is bound to get a few more towns, maybe even a metro or 2...

Then look after the elections for the scramble as the DA makes everyone apply for their own jobs again. With competence as the main criteria! Some deployees will surely be ejected!

This is municipal elections dude. Gauteng will not be on the ballot paper :erm:

You know, the sad thing is that if the ANC just improved their service delivery and lowered corruption, people would not be too bothered about voting for the DA. But instead of improving themselves, instead they want to buy votes and ship voters in to secure metros.

Ja, I know that. But the DA could take all the municipalities in Gauteng is more correct. Don't ya think?
 
Guys, I know this is going to be unpopular, but a bit of thought is required.

Taking the 2009 provincial election results for Tshwane (usually the best indication of what municipal elections might turn out to be), the ANC got 546000 votes. DA and COPE together got 300000. Registered population is about 1.3m people.

So that's a million registered voters who DIDN'T vote DA in the last election.

Also, note this. In th 2006 municipal elections, COPE didn't exist, the ANC got less then 480000 votes, and the DA alone over 265000. ANC (and COPE...) support grew between '06 and '09 while DA stayed stable.

I know we're sort of comparing apples with pears here, but still. Look out for over-confidence. There's still a lot of work to be done if the DA is going to take another metro.

And that is the true value of real democracy and strong opposition. Even if the ANC still wins, but up their game in terms of service delivery, then SA is better off.
