The ANC has lost ground since 2011 in three of the six municipal wards it won in by-elections on Wednesday, according to results released by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

These were in Greater Taung in North West, Kgatelopele in the Northern Cape, and Ward 35 in Cape Town.

The biggest drop was in Greater Taung. In 2011, the African National Congress won 94.7 percent of the vote, compared to 71.1 percent this year.

In Ward 35, Cape Town, the ANC won 79.2 percent of the vote, compared to 88.3 percent in 2011.

The decrease was small in Kgatelopele, where the party's 57.1 percent in 2011 dropped to 51 percent this year.

The ruling party also snatched two wards from other parties.

It took Ward 46 in eThekwini from the Democratic Alliance with 43.6 percent of votes, and Saldanha Bay from an independent candidate with 84.2 percent of the votes.

This week's municipal by-elections saw the ANC winning six of the 10 wards across the country, with the remaining four taken by the DA.

Voters spoilt a total of 411 ballot papers in nine of the wards. Citizens in only one ward -- Thaba Chweu in Mpumalanga -- did not spoil a single ballot.

Ballots were cast by 30,565 of the 87,957 people registered to vote in the 10 wards.

The DA lost ground in two of the four wards it won. These were in Ward 49 in the eThekwini metro and Ward 43 in Cape Town.

The biggest drop for the opposition was in eThekwini. In 2011, the party won 56.6 percent of the vote, compared to 50.6 percent this year.

In Ward 43 in Cape Town, the DA won 80.4 percent of the vote, compared to 84.3 percent in 2011.

The opposition party gained support in the Hibiscus Coast in KwaZulu-Natal and Thaba Chweu in Mpumalanga.

In KwaZulu-Natal it won 55.3 percent of the vote this year, compared to 54.3 percent in 2011, and in Thaba Chweu it secured 87.6 percent compared to 74.5 of the vote in 2011.

ANC branches react to by-election results

The ANC in the North West and Western Cape on Thursday said they were elated by the party's victory in six of the 10 wards contested in Wednesday's municipal by-elections.

"The people of Taung have spoken through their ballot that the ANC is a revolutionary movement that represented their aspirations in the past, that represents their aspirations now, and represents their aspirations in future," said North West spokesman Ishmael Mnisi in a statement.

"We want to thank all our people who reaffirmed their confidence in the ANC by ensuring that in their numbers they vote [for] the ANC."

The ANC took Greater Taung in North West, Ward 48 in the eThekwini metro in KwaZulu-Natal, Ward 35 in Cape Town, Ward 9 in Saldanha Bay, Kgatelopele in the Northern Cape, and Lephalale in Limpopo. The remaining four wards were won by the Democratic Alliance.

The Western Cape ANC said it was on a winning streak.

"The ANC's winning trend continues to confirm that support for the ANC in the [Western Cape] is on the rise," it said in a statement.

"The party is able to consolidate its base areas in the Cape metro while winning back lost ground and in particular in rural areas."

ANC DENIES CITIZENS THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE

Due to the many issues within the African National Congress (ANC ), some members of the ANC decided to deny the citizens that vote at Sinoxolo Educare Centre their Constitutional right to vote in the Ward 35 by-election today.

While some ANC members locked the VD gates and disappeared with the key, others chased any voters that approached the VD away. The ANC insured that no voters were granted access to the aforementioned VD. They claimed to have done this to insure that no citizens vote in the by-election today.

After numerous attempts by the SAPS to get ANC members to move away from the entrance of the VD, the VD remains closed. This is a total disregard by the ANC for the Constitution

^^^ this is how they retained Ward 35 ^^^

Expect more of this but my money is on the EFF to bring guns to a knife fight during the May elections when the ANC starts this crap in EFF country.

So how can there be a result if this happened? Wtf is wrong with the iec?

Wtf? Why have the IEC not acted on this blatant violation of citizens' rights?

Can the DA not take them to the electoral court?

I don't trust the electoral commission liaison committees outside the Western Cape, especially those with an ANC stronghold. In this instance there is no consultation and co-operation between the electoral commission and the registered parties in concern, no DELIVERY OF FREE and FAIR ELECTIONS.

This is wrong on so many levels!!! There goes our only hope for free and fair election!!! And the ANC still calls itself a democratic party!!!...Anything PUBLICLY held by the ANC...Protesting, marches or whatever, even those of opposing parties, the ANC turns into a violent situation!!! There is NO reasoning! And NO fair competition!!! They are a bunch of dictators disguised as "politicians promoting democracy"!!!

Will we have international observers monitoring our elections on the ground with the upcoming election?

let's all chip in and buy an ad for e-tv of "free and fair" elections

Will we have international observers monitoring our elections on the ground with the upcoming election?

The Electoral Act makes provision yes, but only these organisations may be included:

- Organisation of African Unity
- European Parliamentarians for Africa
- Southern Africa Development Community
- And other entities in line with the above

Only organisations can apply to the IEC to observe elections.
