ANC not calling a special council

The ANC denied on Monday that there will be a call for a special national general council at its national executive committee (NEC) this coming weekend.

"I am not aware of such a call. If there is any it cannot fly into the NEC meeting. We had our conference in 2012, why should we call another conference?" African National Congress spokesman Jackson Mthembu asked.

He said the ruling party was focusing on the national election next year.

"We are concentrating on our... campaign to win in the coming national election."

He said the NEC meeting would be an ordinary meeting and the ANC would not be dictated to by newspaper reports on how to run its affairs.

The New Age reported on Monday that sources within the ANC said there would be a move to call for a special national congress where President Jacob Zuma would be removed and replaced by deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe ahead of the election, and Cyril Ramaphosa to take over as the country's president next year.

So in ANC language, that means they ARE calling a special council.

You are right.

First they deny everything about a meeting, then the spokesperson knows nothing about a meeting and WHAM! suddenly it will be an ordinary meeting ... all in the same article / interview....

South African government leaders are really as stupid as they appear to be....
 
They cannot afford a no-confidence or impeachment vote during election year. Too many people incorrectly assume that the ANC is run autocratically by Zuma. It's not...
 
Just too much dirt on Zuma being dragged out now. It's starting to hurt their PR.

It's easier for them to cover for him when he is on the back burner and not in a position of power.

Then they can put another "front man" in as president and he can start building his own Nkandla from scratch.
(that will also serve as a distraction from past scandals)
 
I will be glad to see Zuma go but on the other hand I think it would have been good if he stayed right where he is with the whole NEC backing him all the way. Think this would have hurt them far more in the election that a recall of him will do.

If they do recall him and replace him it will bode well for them for the elections.
 
The fact that they're not shows just how deep the Zuma mentality is entrenched in the ANC.
 
if there polling calculations show a tangible risk of falling below 50% of the national ballot they will go into emergency "Hold or Exit Contingency" meetings and planning the ANC knows that unless they have 210 MPs in the NA they wont be able to get a reelection for Zuma within 30 days of the assembly convening and 52.5% of the vote is not in the bag. They also know that at least 10% of the party will go into defiance and rebellion if Zuma is sidelined. The maths is done frequently and the moment booting Zuma guarantees gaining more votes without the outbreak of public violence than it will cost them his day is up.

A lot of people deep in the ANC are very afraid of the lack of an exit strategy as the scales start tipping.
