ANC welcomes Russia repatriations

It is heartening that government continues to try and have struggle heroes buried in Russia repatriated to South Africa, the ANC said on Tuesday.

The African National Congress welcomed reports from the presidency that South Africa was in talks with Russia regarding repatriations, spokesman Zizi Kodwa said in a statement.

"Comrades Moses Kotane, JB Marks and Ivor Jones are just a few of these exemplary heroes and heroines whose names continue to reverberate throughout the annals of our history."

The ANC called on South Africans to celebrate Heritage Month this year by recommitting themselves to the ideals of equality, freedom and a better life for all, which many in the country and abroad had fought for.

"Twenty years into democracy, it is these stories of perseverance and triumph that anchor our decisive and sustained actions to build a national democratic society as we move South Africa forward."

Moses

Kotane was a well-respected member of the struggle for majority rule in South Africa by even non-communist leaders. Walter Sisulu credited him as a "giant of the struggle" because of his logical and non-dogmatic approach.[3] Kotane was also a leading member of the African National Congress at the same time as the SACP. With the African National Congress, Kotane served as Treasurer General from 1963 to 1973 when he was replaced by Thomas Nkobi.[4] Kotane, representing the Communist Party, attended the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, Indonesia. From 1956 to 1961, Kotane was a defendant in the Treason Trial alongside fellow South African leaders Nelson Mandela, Albert Luthuli, Joe Slovo, Walter Sisulu and 151 others. Despite years of prosecution, none of the defendants, including Kotane, were convicted

JB Marks

Marks was part of the first generation of Black South Africans that joined the Young Communist League in the 1920s. He took part in the congress of the International Committee of Negro Workers, held in Moscow in 1928

Can't find anything about Jones. I'll just assume Stalin gave him the deathglare and sent him to Siberia.

There can't be that many.

The right way would be to just cremate them and get DHL to courier back a few shoe box size parcels but the comradely way of doing it will be for a delegation of a few dozen favoured trough-feeders to make separate visits to Russia to bring back each individual at enormous expense, a substantial part of which can be skimmed off into the delegates' pockets.
