[Ancient Code] BASIC listing for The Valley

Brings back memories of the 80's when I used to type in tons of BASIC game listings on my C64 ;-) Still have a few sites bookmarked with old listings...

Still remember typing in this one. It was one of the best games of the time (things have changed a lot since then)

Another classic of the time was Star Trek, which I used to play on an IBM System/370. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_%28text_game%29 has external links to the original code and subsequent ports. May be possible to play it in terminal mode on an android device.

Oooohhh.... :D

I typed in Eye of the Star Warrior back in the day. Was a major undertaking.

Not something which I'll do again... took me a good while to get it all down.

But it was fun in those days :D Typing in reams and reams of code, and having your eyes go all % after the 3rd page or so :D And hunting down typos :D

Nowadays you don't get type-ins anymore... just a quick copy-paste-compile or download-install...

The sad thing is that the loading off tape option may still be faster than loading some of the current games off hard drive. Guess that there is a reason some gamers like SSD drives.

Awesome - this is why you don't get proper programmers anymore. These articles use to inspire us to developer, create new games and explore code. Its rather sad that new developers have missed out on this as they no longer need to use their imagination.

When my kids are old enough to code, I'm going to try and get more articles like this to try and inspire them.

When my kids are old enough, I'll do the same. Get a BASIC compiler up, and teach them, well, BASIC, just so they get the hang of things.

Then Pascal/C and so on (if they're willing).

Most newer programmers benefit from copy/paste - if it works, it's good enough, no matter if the source is 100Mb's large, and the target is 500Mb large... but that's just my opinion :p
