It's raining beautifully her in Pretoria East and it's great but the first thing to happen is my Adsl drops and won't be steady for at least 3days. This always happens when it rains. Not even heavy lightning. Just the sight of a cloud and it drops.

Time to go LTE.........

I'm no expert but surely LTE is more susceptible to weather than physical cables?

not really. it could push up the error rate, giving you a slower connection, but unless Katrina strikes, you'll be ok. what does worry me about LTE is the contention on the tower when this R999 / 100Gb thing from Telkom lifts off.

You have cable problems, somewhere water is getting in.

I tend to have the same problem. Then I report a line fault and by the time a technician responds everything is fine again. Repeat cycle until we have a few days of rain and they discover the fault and I'm sorted for another few months.

Their solutions tend to only last a few months which really irks me, seal it up properly rather than just patch the location. Another note, every time the technician has to look for the location of the fault from scratch rather than being able to look on the system as to what was done last time and go straight there.

Why not go FTTH?

Hey Hey
They busy installing fiber so maybe wait and see for a month or so.

I used to stay on a big hill, when it started raining the Telkom manhole lid at the bottom of the hill would come off.
Many liters of water would come out of this manhole, then the next one up the hill would fill up and so on and so on.
Until many manholes were filled with water (making small swimming pools).
These swimming pools would take roughly 3 days to drain.

but when I asked Telkom if this was the problem I was assured it wasn't? I was told its was rather a faulty "storm detector" that was put in at the exchange. I don't actually know if there is such a thing as a "storm detector" or if Telkom owns such things but I guess they never replaced their "storm detector" because up until the day I left that house after the slightest bit of rain my inet went crazy for 3 days.

I managed to speak to someone from Plessy (fibre internet installers) at a pub one day and he told me that it is directly related to the water in the manholes (imagine that). He then told me that a R100 tube of foam sealant would be able to fix the water problem in 20-30 manholes but if you or me were to do that we could be fined R50 000 - R75 000 for opening one Telkom manhole.

So based on these events I think we can sum up what the problem was for me and this may be the same problem for you.

Where in Faerie Glen? I have a tower there and may be able to provide WISP coverage.
