I just downloaded Andriod SDK and got my eclipse setup and ready... Am about to go through some tutorials and wonder if this is something worth spending time on? How many Job opportunities out there in SA?

not many ops in ZA. But if you think about it... this kind of work has no boundaries. : ]

There are mobile dev jobs available, you shouldnt only concentrate on android thou, also spend time on iPhone, Symbian and Blackberry.

It will give you a good opportunity to get work in the USA, or Europe as that is where most of the mobile apps come from.

Jack of all trades and master of none, I would hugely disagree here. I would pick 1 and then learn it and learn it well. IF down the line and once you are really comfortable with 1 then pick up another one and start playing with it. Android is huge and growing by nearly 200k handsets per day. The apps too are growing at a massive rate but the limits are still yet to be seem so it is a young and exploratory field. It is still new enough and so it would be easier to get into than the more well established Symbian and the overly saturated iPhone.

Yeah but one thing at a time .. My Agency sent my CV to a Co. developing in Andriod. But they sent some strange quiz/form to complete which lost me interest. wondering if am not over reacting.. .But really, that pdf requested me to analyze some hot dog and improve it or state if funny... There were other cartoons as well.

Well 2 things: Best IDE= IDEA and don't ne a cheapo, get that personal license. I learned my lesson on how to spend money wisely: Sun transition meant end of netbeans JEE support so I made the move an paid the money to IDEA and I now know that my development environmrnt will never be messed up again.
2nd: Android is king (busy downloading it ironically as we speak or in this case type :p) J2ME died because Sun never did anything and the future of Java on mobile is now android.
