Okay, so I got my Dell XPS 12 dual booting with Android 4.2.2. It is very very impressive. With the XPS 12 hardware it boots almost instantly and the screen transitions are super smooth.

I have 2 issues though.

1. The keyboard does not pop up when needed. Like when selecting a text box. I have to flip the XPS 12 out of tablet mode to get to the physical keyboard. Not cool.

2. Google Play Store is not installed. Without this it is pretty useless to me.

Anyone got any ideas how to get around the above 2 issues?

Damn, seems if you even get Play Store working on Android 4.2.2 x86, most of the apps (particularly games) won't work - yet.

Best option seems to be Android 4.0.

Why's that?

Samsung's new Ativ Q apparently runs 4.2.2 and Win 8 seamlessly, with ability to start and pin Droid apps on Win Start and vv.

ARM instr set required?

Can't answer. Still in the discovery stage and this is what I have read trawling the web.

What's VV?

Sorry for abbrevs. On phone.

vv = vice versa. :D

Me also on phone. Your excuse is not acceptable :-)
Thanks for clearing that up.

Read some reviews on the Ativ Q. Hole someone manages to port the software to other convertibles like my XPS 12. That would be such a win.

Time to trawl the web some more.

Do you know if the Ativ Q is running Android natively in a dual boot configuration or through Bluestacks in Windows?

I am assuming it is the latter if you are able to pin android apps to the task bar. Trying to figure this out because if it is native then I want a port. I tried Bluestacks but it is still too laggy.

Hole?

(#&%***#$ mini keyboards + fat fingers)

Get Swype/Switkey or touchpal keyboard, they really help when using fat fingers on touchscreen tiny keyboards.... Oh wait Windows :D

http://www.appbrain.com/ has your back, they have almost all the apps thats on Gplay, also Amazon App store is now available in SA so you could try that as well.

You still have the XPS 12? Thought that you would have sold it..

lol - no dude. I have grown quite an attachment to it. Freaking thing is an awesome device.
Being an i5, it has it's limitations, but expected. I can't dock it to a second screen and run a movie on the second screen while coding. Thing struggles to do both.
So I use it inside to code where I don't dock it, and just watch my movies via the Roku on the TV. Daytime I code outside in my home office on my desktop. So sorted.

With me getting Android dual boot on it now - well... This thing really fits all my needs. iPad got sold yesterday and all my Android tabs have been distributed amongst the family. Only need my XPS 12 and desktop now (and still got the XPS 15 in case I ever need it).

Android is running native on the device dude. Not through Windows.
Besides, Windows 8 is really good on the touchscreen. Very fluid. No issues using it. Keyboard good too.

Problem is I don't think 4.2.2 has ARM to x86 support which is why they have not included Google Play. Android 4.0 has this support so I will probably roll back to 4.0 until 4.2.2 is out of testing for x86.

Got a lot of purchases through Google Play, so this is my primary preference for my apps.

Until the Retina Macbook Pro at a decent price pops along :D

But I'm glad that you are enjoying it. Was going to recommend the Samsung Ativ Q to you, but the XPS 12 seems to be doing fine...

Going to fiddle some more tonight with Android on my XPS 12.

If anyone else is keen to fiddle, here is the download link: https://01.org/android-ia/downloads

To setup a dual boot, you need to first create a partition at the END of your drive. About 8 to 10GB will suffice. Don't format or anything. The installer will pick it up and partition it further for Android.
Thereafter - you will have a dual boot setup.

Mike,
Are you still running android on your XPS? Have you tried android ia?
