45.1 percent combined share

Fragmentation is one of the biggest issues facing Google’s Android OS and as usual the latest version distribution figures published by Google make for some interesting reading. By interesting we mean frustrating.
Gingerbread remains the dominant platform, running on 44 percent of active Android devices across the globe. However, Android 4.x versions have finally managed to pass Gingebread, with a combined share of 45.1 percent. Ice Cream Sandwich powers 28.6 percent of Android devices, while Jelly Bean 4.1 and 4.2 account for 14.9 and 1.6 percent.

The Jelly Bean 4.2 figure is particularly interesting. The numbers were compiled on March 4, a couple of days before the first non-Nexus devices started receiving the 4.2 update. This means that all Nexus devices launched since 2011 and all devices running custom 4.2 ROMs have a tiny share.

Older versions are down but not out. Froyo (2.2) can still be found on 7.6 percent of devices, while Eclair (1.6) and Donut (2.1) can still be found powering 0.2 and 1.9 percent of Android devices respectively.

Getting there slowly.
