Android app help required

Hi there guys I require some help and or direction on creating what I thought was a fairly easy app for android
in Android Studio
But I seem to be failing , possibly due to lack of or limited xml knowledge.

I have a pdf book that I want to make an app nothing fancy just a small search function with the table of contents .

Like I said I have failed and most of my results are not close to looking remotely good .

I would appreciate any help , or even a sample project file that contains the structure , or even a link to a tutorial

If you were still using Eclipse, I would suggest working through the tutorials. I have not used Android Studio yet, so not sure what are the best options now.

can you point me to a tutorial in eclipse
I would appreciate that , I cant seem to find anything of help
