Hi Guys

I have what I think is a good app idea for anyone who has time abd know how or skill to try it. I would do it myself but the only language i know is turbo pastel. I was planning to upgrade but decided to learn excel instead which went well.

Anyway some background.... It is now 10pm and my area is under going load shedding for fews hours so far which is annoying. So i want to know when we have power again which can be anytime and chances are i would be asleep.

My old school options are leaving the light on but chances are I would be fast asleep and wouldnt notice or even asleep face down. So here comes the app. Most phones have light sensors built in so all the app needs to do is sound an alarm when there is a drastic change in the lighting (obviously depending on power drain, maye a ten minute refresh time).

Other options include using the camera or even leaving the phone plugged into charge( surge protected plug) and the alarm starts when the phone begins to charge.

I havent programmed an apk but I dont imagine it being a very long code. Just a repeat until loop but then again i am a noob.

Any thoughts or suggestions or anyone willing to accept the challenge?

I think the problem is that the app might interfere with the sleep state of the phone. If there is no activity for a while, most phones fall into a very low CPU usage state. I dont know how your app would be able to function, without unnecessarily draining battery life. I would maybe make it wake the phone up every 10 minutes to check if the power is on.

The second thing is, I'd be less irritated by having to switch the bedroom light off, than by having to turn off an alarm. And, why would you want to know in any case? Ie, turn the bedroom light on, go to sleep, when the light is on, your power is on.

@ point 1... i mentioned a ten min refresh time

@ point 2... as mentioned... a light switching on when you asleep most probably wouldnt be enough to wake you

Update... Power supply resumed...

I am not understanding what the actual purpose of this app would be? To notify you of load shedding using the light sensor of the phone?

The only way to effectively do this is to hope that Eskom or whoever create and API that you can make use of to pull load shedding schedules. This of course will mean that someone at Eskom will have to keep the schedules up-to-date all the time... And we know what the chances of that are...

Seems like it and it's a pretty poor way to go about doing that. What happens when a light just fuses?

That's one of the problems...

What will happen when you just put the lights in the room / house off? What happens when it gets dark at night? Just a few questions.

Only reliable-ish thing to do, is use Tasker / Llama, and add the relevant action to play a sound when the charging state changes.

I dont think my plan came across clearly as most people have missed the purpose completely.

The point of the app would be to inform the user when power supply RESUMES after load shedding assuming the user is asleep.

Eg: Load shedding begins at 8pm. User need to type up a document on desktop computer urgently for work the next day or a mother needs to boil milk for baby or a student needs to learn for test next day or any reason why someone would want to know as soon as power supply resumes for example at 2am.

Here is where the app comes in. It will detect when the phone begins to charge or the light comes on n wakes the user up. This will allow the user to sleep and not have to be half asleep or keep waking up to check.

And i know its Turbo Pascal... but i was typing in the dark and was not in my best state of mind.
