Android attack

... although I have had bad experiences with Linux before :/ I guess it created a sort of stereotype for me and Linux in general.

Agreed. I had terrible experiences with Linux installations in the past... but these days it's totally different. I'm a Windows-XP and Ubuntu - Hardy user
and I must say I prefer Ubuntu.

They all fail in that they can't run Windows binaries...WINE doesn't do a great job either.

They all fail to some extent for support (archives are full of l33t linux users ;)).

1. Ever tried to run an application compiled for linux in windows?

2. Man pages tell all, its really not that difficult.

But running an open source based solution on your cellphone cant be bad at all. Google has obviously been learning from Apple, how many iphone users realise they are running a bit of BSD on their phone?

What - there are compiled application for linux ?!

Why man page in linux when windows usage comes naturally.

Ubuntu and other distributions comes mainly in compiled packages.

X-Windows on Linux comes equally naturally. Take two beginner users... give one a X-Windows Linux-box and the other a Vista box and observe !
Both users will search the net... I propose the Linux guy/gal will have more help available from the Internet !

Yawn, linux windows debate

Yawn, linux windows debate continues!!!

THought I would be reading debates about Android, but alas, it seems to be the old debate about windows versus linux.

Linux fans: well done, I am proud of you, you have found the place for Linux. Now accept that Windows has also found a place.

Windows fans: Well done, you have found a place for Windows. Thank you for the fact that most of you acknowledge Linux, and even state that it is good for its uses, which is really internet bound.

Ok, I might be biased on this, but so be it.

Back to Android.

Since most netbooks, mine included is only used as a second machine, for email and internet only, with a bit of terminal server login, Android could work, as long as they can make it familar and user friendly for end users. Also people like to add their own apps, and that is where the challenge will be.

I hate the fact that they disabled buying paid apps on dev phones :( Wanted to get one as soon as my credit card recovered from paying a deposit on our new place :(

Hopefully Vodacom will bring in the HTC Magic + Dream soon after Vodafone gets it around April.

Then my most difficult choice would be to decide if I need a dedicated keyboard...

I actually have to agree with Rouxenator. The man pages are really that bad. You always have to end up buying a book to tell you actually how to use what you have read and most importantly the order of doing things. Tutorials are key, and it would make a lot of sense to first time users. Windows have been doing that form the start. We IT orientated guy/gal(s) take that for granted.

Now to get back to Andriod. If I understand correctly, most applications are written in Java for the Andriod? Or are the most written with Gtk (speed) in mind?

If it is Java, then Linux shouldn't be attacked here. It could have been Symbian/OS X/Windows running Java.

My 2c.
