Android Auto (Google Assistant) vs Apple Carplay (Siri)

Yes, that one lol.
Quick q, can you use navigation on Maps while listening to the Radio?

Do you mean the head unit’s own radio?

I think that would be head unit dependant but pretty sure mine does that.

I just never radio. Or have vocal navigation on for that matter.

CarPlay in iOS 12: Audio app improvements, new framework, third-party navigation apps

At WWDC on Monday, Apple officially announced that CarPlay is gaining support for third-party mapping applications such as Waze and Google Maps. Apple offered additional details about this feature, as well improvements to existing CarPlay apps, during a WWDC session this week…

First and foremost, Apple detailed improvements coming to audio applications in CarPlay. Albert Wan, part of the iOS Car Experience team, explained that iOS 12 focuses on four main improvements in CarPlay:

- Improved performance
- Faster startup sequence
- Smoother animations
- Better communication to your app

One point Wan stressed to developers is that they need to account for common driving scenarios, such as the iPhone connected to CarPlay being locked with a passcode, and varying network signal. For instance, app should populate content when possible to avoid network drops affecting audio playback.

Next, Mike Knippers, also on the iOS Car Experience team, explained the process of bringing existing navigation applications to CarPlay. He said the new CarPlay framework will allow developers to put forth “a little bit of effort” to bring their applications to CarPlay:

“The CarPlay framework is your toolkit for building great, interactive experiences on the car screen. It uses a fixed set of templates that your apps can build and use, and iOS will translate into a UI presented on top of your app. With this, and a little bit of effort on your part, your apps will support all CarPlay systems.

For navigation apps in CarPlay, Apple stresses three main points. Those include panning through map interface, providing navigation alerts, and offering full-fledged navigation. This includes details such as when a user arrives at their destination, time estimates, and upcoming maneuvers.

Ultimately, Apple hopes that the new CarPlay framework will make it easier for developers to bring their existing applications to CarPlay.

The CarPlay framework provides a system-generated and -hosted user interface that you customize to display your navigation app. The framework maintains control over UI elements—such as touch target size, font size and color, highlights, and so on—while also enabling your app to display custom map tiles, trip and routing information, and more.

This flexibility lets you focus on delivering a great CarPlay experience without the burden of creating an app that works on all supported CarPlay systems.

I’ve put in a beta feedback request to add a toggle for left/right interface or some other means of pushing it from the phone that doesn’t rely on the manufacturer.

Here’s hoping someone cares.

Would be nice to see it on AA as well.

Sygic is working on Apple CarPlay support with proper offline mode

With iOS 12, Apple opened up CarPlay to third-party map software and Sygic is excited to jump on board. You can see a post on the company’s blog from two years ago that explains why Sygic maps weren’t on CarPlay or Android Auto. The reason, of course, was that Apple and Google allowed only certain apps to do navigation (and for Android Auto that is still true).

Sygic has been working on support for CarPlay since the announcement was made at the WWDC and will give a progress update in the coming weeks. So, it may be a while before it launches.

What can the company offer that Apple Maps can’t? Offline navigation. Apple Maps lacks a proper offline mode, it can only cache the necessary data before you leave. If you need to make a detour along the way you’re out of luck.

The Sygic app can work fully offline and includes Predictive Routing (forecasts traffic based on 2-years worth of historical data), speed limits and a rich Point of Interest database.
