WhatApp works a treat for me - and it's free and it safe and encrypted.
Unlike SMS and MMS and RCS which are not free, not safe (sim swap anyone), not encrypted and costs +75c per message.

Additionally, there is no compatibility / support for RCS on on various networks.
Each network needs to implement RCS based on their desireded feature set.
Try sending an RCS message from MTN to VodaCom - the implementation is different.
