So I've just got my Samsung Galaxy SII and I'm loving it. Made the move from Blackberry, so its a definite improvement.

The only problem I'm having is data usage. I have a 250MB Bundle, as well as a 120MB that came with the phone. That went in 15 or so days. According to Onavo (a data usage app), 300MB of that was from email. How thats possible is beyond me, as my total email size on the 2 accounts I have linked came to around 40MB in total (thats according to the server).

Now I know I cant trust that app entirely, but I've turned off FB, uninstalled the FB chat app, and any other apps that seem to sync. And still, my data usage is going crazy, 60MB in 24 hours. I know I can turn it off entirely, but the whole point of having a smart phone is so I can get my emails on the go.

Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks,
Sysem

Onavo install it. It will tell you where your data is going. And also give you the option to limit the guilty apps to wifi only data.

Already done? See post?

Have you stopped email sync and see if it still ticking?

Also is this normal mail or Gmail?

If its normal you using pop or IMAP ?

go to accounts sync. turn off auto sync all apps except the email apps. you need to setup your apps and stuff properly else they will rape your data. i think only the major apps is in the sync menu. onova sux. i will look tonight what i have. it monitors wifi and 3g but its nice because it will give you a report per app and then you will see whats causing it...then you go into the offending apps and turn off auto-refresh. twitter apps love auto-refreshing. and depending what app you have it could be alot of data...

I tried Onavo's feature of block on mobile, but emails kept coming through. Other than that, I'm not quite sure how to stop only the email app from syncing? I'm using the stock email app.

Seems "Auto-sync" is off already. But I couldnt find a way to select which apps to allow or not?

If you talking about stock mail as in not Gmail, best is to set Gmail to pop your office and push to your phone.

Im stepping out for a bit will check back after 5 if you did not come right.

My only advice would be to not use the email app that comes standard with the phone and rather download and use K9 or something similar.

I also have excessive data usage via the email app, but only since I upgraded to ICS.

I rooted my device and with a firewall blocked the email app from using 3G. I am connected to wi-fi 95% of the time so it is not really an issue for me.

Not a bad idea.

Wish I was connected to WiFi most of the time :( Was actually thinking of getting K9, really dont like the stock app anyway.

Have you restrcited your email to wifi only? Can't remember if Onavo allows it...

If you are willing to root- DroidWall is superb at restricting data usage in my experience...

when you get the data report you have to go into each app and check for auto-refresh options. most install with auto-refresh as a default.

Get K9 or Maildroid, stock app is a menace, there is also a social app on the Samsung's thats known to be a data whore

I'd like to stay away from restricting it at all. But for testing purposes, I restricted it using Onavo, but emails still came through. Not sure how to restrict it other than that.

When I find a ROM I like, I'll upgrade to ICS and get DroidWall.

I seem to be confused, this from Onavo?

Ah, those stupid Hub applications. Will try remove them!

Upgrade to ICS and you can use it's inbuilt data monitoring to restrict background data. Not sure how to do this in GB?

Well, for those that uses ICS, Onavo has a app that will compress your data too, not just monitor it. It is called Onavo Extend. It says it can compress it by up to 80%. Maybe give it a go.

I just checked my bundle...and I have only used 184 megs so far this month...and I have my sync on etc. I only use WhatsApp, Gmail (Gmail App) and now and again will browse a site or two if I am not on my laptop.

Then again...I am using the bestest phone in the world...the RAZR....just saying hehe :p

This is an S2 thread; what's your Moto-crazy @ss doing in here anyway? :p

Oh, ICS FTW btw!!!! :D
