I have been looking for some courses to help me get into Android / iOS App Development, but the only reasonably priced course I found is in Cape Town and all the rest are way too expensive for me to attend for the courses in Gauteng.

So does anyone know of any other places I might be able to get more information on courses available in Gauteng, but that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

Hi Sou1Co11ector,

I recently looked into this too - and decided that I did not "trust" mobile development "camps" that much. e.g.: Are the instructors any good or are they just going by the "book"

So, I took to an online course which I am just about finished with - it's great for beginnings and requires no programming experience - however, you will benefit from knowing the C language a little.

The site is: www.teamtreehouse.com

it's $25 p/m
So, it's not that expensive.

The best part is it gives you quizzes and code challenges to really cement your knowledge of the language / iOS / Android development.

Books are always a good learning material. I find they give deeper explanations and you come out knowing more. IMHO.

I decided recently that I'd like to try my hand at developing an Android Game (something ridiculously simple from a game perspective at first) with the only dev experience I have being mainly uni related stuff from years ago.

I bought a book called "Beginning Android Games" - got about 100 pages into it and realised that I dont know java nearly as well as I should to understand fully what was going on.

Subsequently picked up Head First Java and am about 400 pages into that 650 page book. I've learnt alot and the first book makes alot more sense now (though Im only going to go back to it after I've finished this book and build a few more apps)

I'm really weary about courses, especially online ones. I've always been one to teach myself, so I reckon if you want to do the same, get some books and crack on.

I have that book as well and still I would recommend reading Professional Android Application Development first, even if you plan to do games only. The Game book does not cover the platform widely enough, so then you are going to struggle with the ordinary stuff on Android, making for a more frustrating experience.

thanks. you can never know too much, so I'll look to add your recommendation to my growing collection!

The tutorials on the android developer site are good to get started, if you know Java and understand XML you should be good to go from there... A good book always help, maybe one where they work you through building something cool. Don't waste you money and time on a course, they will just throw random theory at you and take your money :)

I recommend the Wrox series. Used it to learn BlackBerry and Android app development.

Apologies for digging up such an old thread. I'm shopping around for some Android training and this was one of the links that came up during my searches on the net. I'll be getting some of the recommended books, but would like to also do a course or two if available.

I'm based in Cape Town and also found a company based here which gives Java and Android training, http://www.peruzal.co.za/

Does anybody have any experience with them? Or could anybody recommend other companies that would give the same kind of training. I have a little bit of Java experience, but it's stagnated for about 5 years now, so I'll want to do a Java refresher as well, which Peruzal also offers.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

I guess nobody uses Android or went for traing ten. LOL

I can't find any reviews for them but they seem to also have offices in JHB.

Maybe get familiar with Java, then just use the Android tutorials (Which by they way is exelently layed out)

I managed to build a working app not knowing anything about Java or android.

Are you currently a developer? If so what language(s) and how many years experience in each?

Your answers will determine my advice.
