Android issues after upgrading to ICS

I updated my S2 to Ice Cream Sandwich recently. Overall I like the new updates but have two issues with the social hub that drive me crazy and which I can't resolve with good 'ol google:

1. When I open the social hub it used to display the last account I selected. Now, it always starts on the Feeds tab. So have to first go to the Messages tab, then select my exchange account (which I use the most).

2. My sync schedule is set to Manual for off-peak hours. But when I open my exchange account (not sure if the same issue applies to other types of accounts) and select Refresh, it shows the refresh icon but does not retrieve the mail. Is there a sync log I can review to find out what's going on?

I'm sure there must ways around these. Anyone that can help?

To be honest, I'm not sure what the social hub does, but couldn't this be solved just by using dedicated apps for Twitter and Facebook?

Alternatively, if you want your various social feeds combined in a single app, there are several that can do this, eg. Flipboard.

I'm not interested in the social media feeds, which is why I'm so frustrated when it keeps on defaulting to the feeds instead of the email.

I'm frustrated that these social apps are actually built into the ROM, and you can't get rid of them unless you root. They chew up huge amounts of CPU cycles.

Ya but that one of the many reasons too root, however an extremely minor one.

It is worth while rooting ... especially when you can use Titanium Backup to freeze/uninstall these unwanted apps. I know people don't want to go through the rooting process for fear of warranty loss or bricking their phones, but for me, it is soooo worthwhile not having this kind of bloatware everyone complains about.

I felt your pain ... not anymore ;)
