I have two recent Samsung tablets, same age - less than a year old. One is the Samsung TAB S 8.4 (T-705), and the other is almost identical but the larger version Samsung TAB S 10.5 (T-805)

I bought the 10.5" T-805 direct from the Samsung store (unbranded), and I bought the 8.4" (T-705) branded from Vodacom. Both are the wifi/LTE versions.

Both got updated to Lollipop over the air when that was available a few weeks ago. Now the problem, the 10.5" unbranded one works fine with USB OTG, I can connect it to my laptop and it shows up as a device on Kies. I can hook up my USB OTG flash drive and transfer files direct to the device.

The other Vodacom 8.4" one is not responsive to OTG USB or USB connections. I connect it to my laptop (using the same cable that worked with the 10.5"), it does not show up in Kies - WTF !, it does not show up anywhere on my computer...not even under portable devices. And I cannot hook up an OTG USB flash drive to transfer files to it. When I hook it up to the computer, it does beep and shows that the tablet is charging off the laptop....but no connectivity as far as file transfer or Kies handshaking.

Because these are almost identical devices except for the one being a Vodacom branded device, I am guessing when I updated to Lollipop, Vodacom has disabled the USB functionality :mad::mad:

Has anyone else noticed this ? Can it be fixed ? Is rooting the only solution ? I guess a fix would be to root it and then load a different ROM to it. I wouldn't know which ROM to load...

I am going to London on wednesday, and have found a place in London that does rooting and ROM loading etc, so if it is too difficult, I will just get it done there.

Any advice ? would a non-geek like me be able to root, find a ROM and load it ? Importantly, I don't see how I could root it with a computer, as the computer does not recognise it

Fwiw my vodacom tab s 8.4 with Lollipop works just fine with OTG drive...

Okay I have fixed the problem. I did a complete factory reset/wipe back to original, and now the tab is recognising USB OTG connections.
