Android malware is stealing your data

ice cream sandwich has that data management app, im sure that will help greatly.

They should really look at MIUI.

Firewall, and Application management per app, GPS and SMS/Phone abilities can be managed individuality as per image bellow.

It also prompts me before allowing apps any access the services like SMS and Phone address books.

Percentages are useless without original numbers. There could have only been 10 malware apps. 30% increase is only 3 :p.

Everytime I raise security issues about Android, I get flamed by fanboois. This is serious scary $hit

Love Android but this is not cool

I have this bloody app installed according to Market. It has chinese lettering then Android and then more chinese lettering in the name. Icon is GB. I cant get this thing off my market. I have even tried a hard reboot and wiped the phone completely....still there. When I open it it says "This item is not available" but no uninstall option????

I also love Android...but they will have to take more control over the Market.

To be fair this is not Android's fault. It is the software writers + negligent users who are at fault. Full marks to Android for providing you with information about exactly what an app will have access to when you try to install it. However there is a case for negligence to some extent. And there is definitely room for improvement.

They should have something similar to User Access Control in Windows. You set up the rights you allow by default and the user should be required to specify this before being allowed to the marketplace. They should just include an 'accept all' button in case it ticks some users off. Then ask for double confirmation before allowing an app which violates these rules to be installed. The foundation for a system like that is already in place. Also. A rating system which includes safe vs. malware indicators should be put in place. If there is already such things I apologize... I missed them - And I am generally proficient with electronic devices.

/agrees

maybe it would make the non-tech-savy people read what they are allowing before they accept/allow...

That looks really nice, better than Droidwall which I have been using on and off. Would be nice if it was a standalone app, I would certainly buy it. Still on Froyo and everything works great so I am not all that keen to do a ROM upgrade.

I don't have a android at the moment so if my comments are way off base then I apolgise but the way I understand android pretty much already has user access controls. Unless apps are installed from other markets the app must list the permissions it requires to use, and if it doesn't and tries to access functions outside it's control the OS won't allow it no matter what. These permissions can't be faked as I understand it because on submitting a app requires submitting a list of permissions required and only those will be asked for at the install of the app.

A lot of people just install anything not looking at what permissions the app requires then when they pick up something bad which drains data, costs money they are quick to blame android.

You are right, but there are two problems with this, the first is that most poepols will just press OK and ignore the warning, the second is that the permissions aren't very granular (well I don't think anyway).

It would be nice to be able to install an app, but deny it access to particular areas if you want to, even if it wants it. This is not an option in Froyo or any other version of Android as far as I am aware. I expect the only reason why this feature is not available is because it could stop free apps that rely on Google advertising accessing the internet to source said advertisements.

As I understand it with rooting this is possible but not reccomended because certain apps require certain permissions to function disallowing those permissions can result in crashes which can cause complete failure on the device like looping at the boot screen ext. because the app tries to access something but is denied every time.

There are a bunch of options out there like droidwall which just blocks internet access per app and then there are apps like permissions denied which can completely revoke permissions for apps {needs root}.

Droidwall also requires root.

As far as I am concerned if an application crashes because it cannot access a resource it is poorly written. A try catch is all that is generally required.

I haven't personally noticed any unusual erosion of my data, but most of my apps are the common ones.

They should really look at MIUI.

Excuse my ignorance, but is MIUI an app in Market? :o
