Asking as an Android developer having 3 applications in Android market 2 is paid for applications that I developed for another company while I was in New Zealand.
I always wondered why South Africa didn't have access to paid for applications in the android market. Cause if you do a decent application you can make a decent living or even extra cash.
I did some research into the field and found in order to get into the market one of our cell phone operators should join the Open Handset Alliance to speed things up. In doing so they will have access to place a custom UI on a handset and earn up to 30% of the income generated on the android market.
Now my question is this with the potential to get extra income as well as have a phone that promote your network, why have none of the operators looked at this? If they have do they simply think there is not a big enough income to be made to validate a dedicated android department in one of them or is it simply a do not care option?
Or they could go for another option and give us another market where South Africans can submit paid for applications dedicated to Africa. This would be the simplest of the routes as they can add the market app for free on Android Market or Pre Install it on there phones.
I mean clearly if Vodacom had such an department it would, create jobs in that company as well as give South Africans an extra avenue for income. Is that not something to wright home about as well getting extra PR points saying you created x amount of jobs?
