So I have a Samsung Galaxy S4, running official firmware version 4.3.

I have avast! Mobile Security installed and it is saying everything is a virus/trojan. Below is a screenshot of a section of a very long list of apparent viruses. Did anyone else have this problem?

There were quite a few similar comments on their app page in the play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.avast.android.mobilesecurity
After a few months it went mental And said that everything I opened was a PUP or virus. Facebook, viber, nova launcher, skype, navionics. .... cya avast, I didnt make any changes to you. Time for a different scanner that wont hijack my phone. Stock samsung galaxy s4.
Big issue It showed everything has a trojen and few pup, and without contemplating that its an issue with acest I did a factory reset and lost all my data
Thanks avast After avast detecting all my apps as trojans and asking to delete all apps even system apps, I had to format my phone and lost my data. Great protection.
Antivirus gone mad Today my fone got mad.... Poping up virus again n again showing to uninstall number of apps..... So i uninstall ur antivirus to solve the problem :-)

You know an anti virus is unnecessary on a phone, right?

Hi there d7,

I had the same issue yesterday and I was freaking out.
Just uninstall it, and install it again from the play store, and update the virus definitions...
They had fixed the issue:

If you have still false positives problems, please update the virus database in the app Settings.

+ Support for Android 4.4, KitKat
+ Several minor bug fixes

No I didn't know this... can you say why?
What about the tracking feature they provide if your phone gets lost/stolen?

You can use the built in samsung feature.......Security, remote control
Or use Google Android Device Manager, tracks, wipes and all that
And yes in my opinion, phone anti-virus is useless and slows down your phone and waste battery. Uninstall it and just dont install programs from wired places. Most stuff in the playstore, sam apps and amazon apps are safe. stick to them and you should be safe.

Thanks, good to know I wasn't the only one...

This is true. When I used Avast, I only used it for the phone-tracking feature. Have since moved over to Cerebrus.

Cerebrus isn't free though... :(

Note to mods: I could have sworn I put "Android Anti-Virus" in the thread title, please can you fix it?

Then use “Android Device Manager”

There doesn't seem to be an app that can remotely turn on the gps on my phone... I normally leave it off to save battery so if I lose my phone I won't be able to track it, anyone know of an app that can remotely turn on gps on an unrooted phone?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidlost

I use this you can control the phone from the website www.androidlost.com
it does have the ability to turn gps on remotely, of course the phone must have a data connection.
The web UI isn't pretty but it is very functional

Just tried it, doesn't turn my gps on remotely... :(

TBH honest i leave GPS permanently on, it really doesn't make much difference on Battery usage, maybe its me but it seems as if current version controls it better switching it on only when needed.

That is why one needs an app that can turn on data remotely via SMS.
In a perfect world :D

My wife recently left her phone in a public toilet, we tried to phone it but the person who had it switched it off. The only saving grace was the pattern protected lock screen that they could not get past. When they did turn it on later they turned off the data connection via the power button menu rendering the Samsung "Find My Mobile" and "Android device manager" services useless (We could not track it at all).

Long story short, they eventually picked up in the evening. We offered a reward for "finding the phone". When we got it back the following day we could see that the data had been turned off.

Obviously a SMS command would not help if the phone is off or in airplane mode, but I have set my phone to turn airplane mode off automatically if enabled.

For phone tracking my recommendation currently would be Cerberus. I got it for free when there was a promo. IIRC it is about R40 once off now. It can also take photos and email them to you when the lock screen pattern is entered incorrectly. Avast's premium version can do the same but works much more expensive IIRC.

If you need a free app, I would probably still use Avast!.

Edit: Another cool feature of these two apps is the Sim check alerts: "Receive alerts if someone uses your phone with an unauthorized SIM card".
