Android Useful Apps

I use it to stream to/from my media center. I wouldn't want to delete anything from my media center.

If you stream a video from your phone/tablet to tv, you can delete the file afterwards via any file explorer...

Yeah, with XBMC you have the option to delete the file from the server, an effective way to open up space as you watch stuff.

Just wish the Android version of XBMC would stream HD content without stuttering.

Trying out a new Launcher I came across on LifeHacker.

Called 91Launcher.

10 minutes into it - I feel its kicking Nova's ass.
Customizable and everything including; widgets and themes are free at the moment.
All apps seem to work with it just fine and it customizes app icons to each theme - very nice.

Will report back in a day or so.

Do you know if it has notification badges for unread messages/missed calls/emails?

It can, just get a better device...

/duck

OR better router, that's definitely a hardware problem, I can stream FHD to my Galaxy Note without so much as a sniffle. I do however have a N300 hooked into a Gigabit network

Looks a lot like MIUI launcher with an app draw?

Anyway the one thing it miss that makes Nova esp Nova Prime so good is the fact that you can re size widgets and icons. So it lacks real customization like what you can do with Apex/Nova as seen here.

Looking forward to it. I'm using Apex Pro along with LMT (works nicely).

What I can say is that I got an SMS and there was a notification badge on it.
Not seen what lock screen is like on that regard.

Still haven't slept since 1900 yesterday though.

EDIT:

Some more feedback from my side.

  • Certain transitions/effects on the home screens can be slightly laggy.
  • Also a bit laggy when wanting to add widgets after a long tap on the home screen.
  • But my biggest gripe - and its because I was so used to it in Nova and because I prefer a minimilast home screen - I'm used to having my apps in folders in the scrolable dock at the bottom. 91Launcher, only allows you to have apps in the dock, no folders.
I'm not in the mood to organise folders just so that they can clutter up my home screen(s) - in Nova I only use 3 - and that's for the sake of centering the wallpaper the way I prefer - otherwise it'd just be one because all my apps are in folders in the dock.

So on that last point - that'll be why I'm going back to Nova.

91Launcher - has upsides - for those whom can make use of them:
  • 1 touch memory cleaner widget.
  • Very descriptive battery widget: Status Bar, estimated time the battery will last, along with battery saving options - like a JuiceDefender of sorts built into it.
  • Gestures: Drag down on a homescreen and a scrolable and editable shortcut menu drops down from the top. Drag up and another menu with shortcuts comes to the fore.
  • Lots of free themes. And they're pretty cool.

These Chinese (I suspect, cos there's lots of things which point to it) devs are on the way to better things.
And I'd hazard that with more updates it can only get better.

But for now - back to Nova.
If they allow me to get Folders into the Dock - I'll be back :)

TheftSpy - looks like this will give Where's my Droid a serious run for its money.
Still in early Alpha version - but loads of features that one would expect for a paid app.

I reckon grab it while we can and hope early adopters keep getting updates free :)

Grabbing it now for testing myself.

DashClock Widget

DashClock is a replacement lock screen clock widget for Android 4.2+. It also exposes additional status items called extensions. The widget comes bundled with extensions that give you instant access to:

• Your current local weather
• Missed calls and unread text messages
• Your next calendar appointment
• Unread Gmail inbox or priority inbox conversations
• Your next scheduled alarm

Best WIFI

Not everyone will need this but, if you have two or more WiFi APs with different SSIDs and you constantly need to switch between them (like I have to) because of signal strength then this app is pretty useful.

It automatically switches to the AP with the strongest signal...

Thanks for this, it works really well.
Just adjust the min signal strength to suit and off you go

+1. This should be the default widget for Android 4.2+.

To save starting a new thread, does anyone know of an app that will switch to silent mode at night and back to normal in the morning?

Tasker can do that and much much more.

Thanks for the tips. I am trying out llama first as it's free:)

I don't know which phone you have, but I think all JB firmwares have that built into the firmware. Samsung certainly has.
