Android Useful Apps

Its a permissions thing on the computer

My permissions are correct, and ES can browse just fine. I'm just saying it doesn't work if I manually enter the local IP address - I have to search/scan and access from there.

Windows file share from a rooted phone

Just would like to ad seeing that we talking about File shares. If you rooted you may wanna look at Samba. That way you can browse, copy and edit files on the device from the comfort of your PC. (Phone just shows up as nother PC on the network)

Oh and for those that running Jelly bean: you will need to edit your
/data/data/com.funkyfresh.samba/files/samba-rc file and add
chmod 644 $NPIDFILE $SPIDFILE below the sleep 1 line ie:

Code:
     7	SPIDFILE=$PRE/var/locks/smbd.pid
     8	NPIDFILE=$PRE/var/locks/nmbd.pid
     9
    10	case "$1" in
    11 start)
    12 $0 stop
    13 $0 cleanup
    14 $0 rmlogs
    15 $PRE/nmbd -D
    16 $PRE/smbd -D
    17 sleep 1
    18 chmod 644 $NPIDFILE $SPIDFILE #Add this line
    19 echo ok
    20		    ;;
    21 stop)

Or you can go pay for it if you really not that comfortable editing files.

There's a disturbing number of negative reviews for that app...

Thats from users on JB that do not know how to get it to work. If you want to learn more about it you can check out the XDA forum on it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=653336

Me I just use Terminal editor + vi and hacker keyboard to fix it and I have no complaints.

Edit: instructions for manual edit.

At $ type su and go to a # prompt then
# cd /data/data/com.funkyfresh.samba/files/
# vi samba-rc
navigate to the line saying sleep 1 and press o
add the line and press ESC key
then pres [shift+Z] + [shift+Z]

If by any chance you do not want to save :q! exits without saving the changes.

And you are done.

Oh ok, I never manually enter the IP, I just scan and save the found folders.

Thats something I always found weird, when I use Superbeam to transfer files between devices its like 18mbps, as soon as i transfer from phone to pc its like 1mbps, yet its the same wifi they going through.

Maybe I should test out this samba, as ftp is just damn slow

ExpenZA what an awesome little app.
Pulls out your expense's based on the bank sending you SMS's even does your income vs expenditure and you can then allocate these to catagories.
Was looking for something like this for ages.
And made for South Africa. Impressed thanks for the recommendation

Hazarding a guess, I think that's because with Superbeam, your one device creates a wifi hotspot, and the other decice connects to that same hotspot, and then the files transfer. The devices are probably held quite close together; whereas with your wifi network, the devices may have a weaker wifi signal?

But with Superbeam, I can't 'share' big files or folders from within ES file Explorer to choose Superbeam; only smaller items are 'share'able. Am I supposed to compress the files first? Otherwise I am forced to use ES's own 'send' feature, but I might not always be at my home wifi network...

I considered that as well, but when both devices are on the same wifi network it does NOT create the hotspot, it uses the existing network instead, which makes perfect sense. Not to mention I have an N300 Linksys barely 5m away.

I had no problem sharing large files with SB from within ES, I did it to test transfer speed so I sent a 1gb video file over, as for folders thats an OS thing, as far as I know ES Send is the only thing that wifi sends entire uncompressed folders, I have not tested it yet though, superbeam has done the job quite nicely for me.

Tested with samba and topped out at 3mb, an improvement over the 1mb with FTP, but seriously if I can get 18mb using superbeam I should really be able to get much better than 3 over to my pc

Thanks for this. Just downloaded and it set it up. Looks awesome so far.

Anyone using Astrid. It has been bought by Yahoo and you have 90 days to pack up and go.

I never actualyl liked it, grabbed it again a few months back to check it out and for the purpose it claims it for, to me it just seem like overkill.
I wanna keep a task list, like using a nuke to kill a spider.

Does suck for all those who actually make full use of it, going to be hard to transfer than nuke over to something else.

Maybe Indigo can help them out

I recently downloaded and started using Memento. It really is an awesome app.

Memento Database is a highly flexible and customizable personal database management tool. Created for anyone seeking to store various data on their Android devices, the software enables users to create custom libraries with unique sets of data fields, quickly add new entries and, finally, share entries with friends or colleagues, or export them to other systems with just a few taps.
