Android Useful Apps

Say what? You can... indirectly! Upload via wifi to dropbox, share link to anyone, they download via wifi. Obviously you both would need to have a WiFi connection to an access point... But at the end of the day, mission accomplished...

Does this app actually go directly device to device via WiFi?

With this app you can send a file to anyone on the same wifi network without it having to go via the Internet. Like bluetooth but much faster, sending photos is almost instant.

Dunno if this has been up before, Wakelock Detector. Shows that Tapatalk is causing the most wakelocks on my Note, followed by Google+, gmail and Google currents.

Actually it does, it can show you the usage for a specific app in a daily format, graphed on per hour basis.

What would actually work better is: My Data Manager - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobidia.android.mdm
It does a better drill-down of usage, and also includes Wifi usage. You can even select which day you want to view the usage for.

Nice - hopefully it'll be of use to him :)

I'm trying to think of how much of a pedantic person you must be to have such an app installed? :p
I can't think of any real world application or need for it

Wake locks causes battery drain... This could help find a rogue app.

I really don't know what hardware you use, or what OS you use on that hardware, or what apps you use under that OS, but when your device suddenly starts working at less than 50% of what you're used to, you want to know why...

And yes, having been a teacher for longer than most myBB members have been alive, I am rather pedantic.

Thanks for the thumbs-up!

Its useful for those without wifi-direct or nfc, I am lucky enough where all my friends phones have wifi-direct so no need for this, if it was able to work with pc's like that then it would've been a real option but the PC is a joke.

I use BetterBatteryStats, gives you a bit more info regarding what going on with battery usage.

Its how I managed to get my phone from 7.6%/hr in idle to 0.9%/hr in idle, seems google maps was a real wake wh0re, over 7k time it woke up the phone in less than 5 hours. Tapatalk was a distant 2nd and seeing how little I used that, was not much issue taking that orr as well.

I occasionally look in on it to see if any new apps are having negative effects on my batter, but now I get about 36-48 hours of normal usage out of my phone.

To be a little more specific, they prevent the phone from entering the Deep Idle state, this is similar to the sleep state of windows, just with a faster wake up time.
On an android your cpu cycles between clocks based on what's happening, most of what you do on your phone will keep it in the 200mhz point, on my note I don't play games so nothing has ever taken it past the 1.2GHz.

Now what's different about deep-idle compared to the cpu clock cycles is, when in deep-idle not only is the cpu underclocked, most everything else is as well, the gpu is put into sleep state, screen powered down further, push service push into minimal state, etc.

On an optimized phone the 200mhz mark can see you at about 2.5-3.5%/hr, while deep idle will knock that as low as 0.7% (possibly further, thats the lowest mines ever gone).

Ok then :)

Haha - Sidewalk Buddy :D

Just installed

Everyone knows that driving and texting is a highly dangerous recipe for disaster, but walking and texting can be just as troubling. So for those of you that just can't quit, Sidewalk Buddy uses your device's rear camera to give you a floating, live video feed so you can essentially see through your phone without ever missing a text. Just please, please don't try to use it while driving. Free

Also trying out Google's answer to Evernote, GoogleKeep
Added to my lockscreens already :)

Google's once mysterious new note-taking service is finally here to stay, and though basic compared to similar programs such as Evernote, the benefit here is that it's extraordinarily well integrated with Android. You'll get homescreen and lock screen widgets, voice and photo integration, and a Holo interface to boot. Free

Pity its ICS + only :(

Have to stick to evernote for now, as I am not updating my Xperia play to ICS just to lose controller support to half my games.

Ah, that sucks...

Fsck I get drunk too often - but I was chatting to someone whom was looking at a contract upgrade and he wanted to go Sony - and its for reasons like your own here, that I advised him not to.
Sony's lacklustre performance on rolling out updates on their handsets are dismal at times IMO.
This dude I was speaking to, mentioned he worked for Vodacom and didn't even know that.

I uninstalled Keep after 5 minutes. It's not for everyone. Evernote is not even the same type of app. I'll stick with Any.do for my to-do list, and Evernote for actual note taking.
