Android Useful Apps

Let me know if you need help with the settings.
Issue: I installed an Afrikaans add-on dictionary with the word Staged showing below it. Do I need to manually switch between languages? Is there any other option to select.

Example - When typing 'hui' predictions include:

hui Hui building
(no huis)

Comment: I prefer using this keyboard since it's super fast and reactive, unlike Swiftkey that occasionally lag. And google (suggested word is lowercase and shift don't Title case or ALL CAPS it) search in keyboard is convenient.

It seems it's a system language problem. Huawei devices don't have Afrikaans as a system language, therefor can't be selected in Gboard. The Afrikaans option under Dictionary/Add-on dictionaries does not suffice. :(

Edit: dankie vir die hulp

O crap. I saw that this afternoon setting up a Huawei P8lite for someone....

I'm going to shamelessly punt my own new app here quickly.

SA ID Number Checker lets you verify an ID number's validity and extracts info regarding age, gender and citizenship from the number.

Please give it a download and rating :)

Of course you don't NEED an app for that. You'll have to do a bit of reading though, especially for the calculation of the last digit
Unless you have access to the home affairs database all you are verifying is that it's an ID number adhering to the official Sa ID number format and not that it is a bona fide ID number of a real person.

Granted its still a handy app.

Conmen can also use it to make sure their homemade ID numbers look legit :D

That's correct, yes. I hope I haven't made it sound like the app attempts to do anything more than just verifying that the numbers add up

mySOS SA

mySOS Emergency app offers you access to appropriate emergency assistance when:

(a) You don’t know who to call
(b) You don’t know where you are
(c) You want to notify your my SOS contacts about your emergency and the exact SOS location
(d) You want the SOS services to navigate directly to our location in an emergency.

Looks kinda useful. Received a message from my medical aid that I have access to the Netcare 911 button on it.

Looks really handy, it does want just about every permission known to man to install and all your personal details to register. Not sure about that, have you tried it yet?

HiPER Calc Pro is the best calculator app by miles. Discovered it yesterday and used the free version to check it out. By default it has a scientific layout, but if you don't need that just change to the compact view.

- has percentage button
- looks like an actual calculator
- lots of fraction options
- 12 decimal places iirc
- big display
- displays fractions properly
- only R20 for pro version

I still maintain this is the best calculator app. Unless you need to do heavy scientific equations...

The instant tipping calculations and measurement conversions are a great feature too!
Also like the look of this app and started to look around for the APK
Followed a trail for Whitegorilla dev to XDA and from there to a Youtube video

In the comments section - DropBox download - posted a year ago

"Hello, you can download the latest pro version of the app at http://goo.gl/xvM6e9. Google has taken down my apps due to copyright issue in one of my apps (I believe) and I have sold the contents of my company. The new owners said they are upgrading the app, and will be releasing it on the play store. I'm sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for purchasing the app."

Installed it on my phone and tablet and works perfectly - currency values get updated in real time

Hope d7e7r7 can take a rest now ;-)

1. It looks ugly as sin
2. Not on Play Store
3. Dropbox link no longer works
4. Hasn't been updated in around 4 years
5. I didn't know people struggled to calculate tips
6. I do need a scientific calculator relatively often

I think it's unlikely the app would work properly in Android Nougat even if an APK was provided to me.

I must say that is nice, beats the stock calc app. Does the free version have no ads just crippled in some way?

There's an explanation when you first open the free app that I can't quite remember. I think the free app only displays expressions properly for the trial period. Not sure if ads appear after the trial.

I paid R20 just to support the dev and not care about ads or missing features.
