I'm slowly migrating from iOS and am in the market for a smart watch. I have an S7 Edge and an iOS phone. I will switch over to the Android phone full time as soon as I can find a decent podcast player. Standard iOS player is still the best in my opinion. Back to my original questions:

1. Is the Huawei watch still a worthwhile purchase? It's been out for a while now, but I like the fact that it can be used with both platforms and has some great reviews. Takealot has it for R4999, best price I can find.
2. If above is not, any recommendations? We don't seem to have many Android options in SA (that I can find, at least). Not interested in Samsung but not necessarily looking for something that has to work with Apple.

Depends. The Huawei watch is probably the best Android Wear watch on the market today. But being over a year old, something better is bound to come along soon... Others to look at: LG Watch Urbane, Asus Zenwatch 2, Sony Smartwatch 3, Moto 360 (2nd Gen.)

I have a Sony Smartwatch 3 and love it.

Pros:
Good battery life: around 2 days but I charge it daily. Screen on all day in ambient mode. I have WIFI and GPS disabled though.
Display is readable in direct sun light (It has a Transflective display). Apparently the Huawei watch fails a bit here.
Comes with a Micro USB port so no proprietary connectors...

Cons:
No speaker
No heart rate sensor

I bought a D5 on eBay. Rather like it. Runs its own full version of Android 4.4.2. Looks good, charge lasts a full day sometimes more, depending on use and Wifi / Bluetooth usage. I paid about $180 for it, plus Vat etc. I think it was around the R3K mark.

How well does it manage notifications on your phone? Can you read and dismiss phone notifications? Can you reply to a whatsapp notification that came trough on your phone for example?

I can't reply to whatsapp messages, I wouldn't want to anyway, the keyboard is so bloody tiny !!! The Phone application will allow you to push any alerts / messages from your phone. I've limited mine to be honest to the bare essentials. But I can Youtube, Facebook etc with the full apps on the watch, although again, its really too small to use effectively. After having a smart watch, I wouldn't get another tbh, unless for sports reasons.

I personally use mine purely because I ride motorbikes. I don't have to dig my phone out to see messages.

thb that sound like you have an android phone on your wrist... Android Wear Its more of an accessory for your phone instead of being a standalone device. Notifications can be read and dismissed on the watch. Whatsapps can be sent via voice - works well (eng only).

Did anyone every purchase the Hauwei Watch, and if so, can they provide any feedback?

Also, anyone know where to buy one? Takealot doesn't have stock. I can't find anywhere else.

Yes , I am very happy with it . I did a fair bit of research (online reviews etc) of the Android wear devices available etc before I ended up going with the Huawei .
It offers the Speaker option as well which alot of the other Android wear devices do not , in fact as far as I know the Samsung watches (in SA) also do not have speaker functionality (The Gear S2 range) .

The Huawei watch also looks like a watch and has a very classic design also allowing for some customisation with the watch bands as it uses regualr watch straps (Leather , rubber , steel etc) . I got the regular leather band in 2 colours and a steel band .

From a functionality point of view It has allowed me whilst in Meetings to quickly glance messages etc without having to take my phone out the whole time which is great because I have young children and you never know when an emergency can occur whether it be a tumble at school or something more urgent . Iv found my battery on my phone has also improved a little simply because I am checking it less often with having the watch .

Originally I got the watch with the view to only wear it during the week to work as I am generally not a big watch person and often just use my phone to check the time etc , but I have found myself using it even on the weekends now as well .

The Huawei is one of the more future proof watches out currently and is going to be one of the first to receive the new Android Wear update as it has been in testing now for a while already .

In the end there are a fair few Android wear/Tizen options out there and majority actually have very similar specs which brings the choice down to more of a design and personal preference factor . I went with the Huawei because of the speaker functionality (which many dont have) but mainly because I liked the design of it over its competition . It has that classic look which is great for work and formal wear , but with a nice leather band on it looks just as good with casual weekend wear .

I just recently bought my wife a Asus Zenwatch 2 and that has been great as well as she has converted from a normal watch to a smart watch now and is really enjoying it especially with the amounts of messages she gets via WhatsApp and BBM , but personally I prefer the round watch faces .

If there is anything more specific you would like to know just shout .

Thank you. Exactly the kind of feedback I am looking for, much appreciated.

How long does the battery last you? And how long to fully charge the watch?

It Charges up really quickly around an hour and a bit from completely flat . Battery life varies, I get between a day and a half to 2 days on a charge , but I usually put it on charge every morning while getting ready for work.

I finally got the Huawei Watch from Amazon on Black Friday as no one in SA has stock or could get stock locally. So other than a small concern that it has a US Warranty, I am loving it. Thanks again for the feedback.

initial impressions seem to be that its a "beta" device and needs alot more work to be done

Haven't seen many reviews for it. Only for the Huami Amazfit fitness tracker not the smart watch. AFAIK it does run a modified Android. Might grab one just for the music capabilities since it's now available in the US.
