i would like to buy some software that would allow me to do animation. i've never used animation software before, so i don't even know what to ask for. is anyone into this sort of thing, and can you give me some advice, please?

I've used Poser before, its actually quite easy once you get used to it. Its the same program they used to animate people falling off the ship in titanic

Also, 3D-Studio Max is really good. You can do anything

But, you said you've never used animation software before so it might be a bit difficult to get your head around at first...

Check out Maya - it's pretty much the de-facto standard.

Buying this kind of software is an enormous investment. Why don't you try Blender first - it's free, pretty good, and will give you a good idea of what you're getting into.

wow, thanx guys. i've just spent 2 weeks on the phone and on the net, trying to get this sort of info myself, and i had ZERO joy. then, i post this thread here, and within 10 minutes, i have exactly what i need. well, guess who's never using google for this sort of thing again?

i found poser 5 download for free, and i've looked at blender, and it looks perfect for the beginner. great info! hey, that maya is awesome, but $5000 is little bit more than i was hoping to pay. i'm gonna try both blender & poser 5 for now.

thanx again, guys.

All good

Whats cool about Poser is that you can download rendered models from movies etc and use them in your own vids...so you can for example, download that spaceship from Event Horizon and do flybys etc.
You can make your own models in StudioMax to use in Poser but its not easy at all. Thats why most animation companies make clay models first and then scan them...

If you're interested in stop motion animation have a look at iStopMotion. Under $50 iirc.
