Announcing a Community Wi-Fi Mesh

@Iliyan

As one person wrote, if you are looking for a "Wow, you are my hero" then you at the wrong place. The history of the WISP is shoddy and you trying to change the definition of a "WISP" does not change anything.

Please, start your WISP, your marketing banter and constant "Confidential" clauses are wearing thin. If you are confident, then DO IT, its not my money or reputation on the line.
You are NOT the first person to video stream over wifi, you are NOT the first one to use roofNET and your ideas are very far from revolutionary. However good the intention is, your choice of technolgy and understanding of how 802.11x works is your achilies heel.

Concept is good, understanding how to implement is somewhat lacking.

I don’t think that I understand where you coming from - after reading up the detailed description of the mesh I provided on this thread, you could only come up with the idea to "load test" it before you believe that it works? Never mind the claims that everyone is an expert here...?

Excuse me if you find me being little bit apprehensive, but if you claim that you are part of this "educated environment" then surely you have the ability to imagine all the technical little bits and pieces of the mesh, combine them mentally into a big diagram, analyse them theoretically for technical performance and then pin-point all the areas you think that would not perform as claimed by me. Then you could have shared those thoughts in a form of a constructive criticism.

I see that it is much easier to throw mud than come up with good question. And no, I don’t want you to blow smoke up my butt.

How pity...

Iliyan.......

Theory and reality are worlds apart, how do all of us here know this, well we have read the theory and aggreed with it in principle. When put into practise, its a whole different ballgame. Regarding "load testing", well our "learned" friend, that either proves or disproves your "magic" theory. The choice of doing it or not is up to you. I can gaurantee if you said to all the guys commenting, please come around and test my "MAGIC" they would be there in a flash, but you havent invited a single "Disenter (in your eyes)" the opportunity to validate your claims. Oh yeh secondly, my car runs at 2l per 100Km, is a possible claim, do you believe it.

I am amazed that you continue to degrade anyone differing from your opinion, its business suicide (case studies: Sentech, Iburst, WISPs). If you are so proud of your achievements, GREAT, WONDERFUL, but dont blame anyone here for the way you are feeling right now. This is a public forum and you requested input, and you got it. Just because it wasnt "positive" does not mean it is bad, but your claims of proprietry this and that, and oh yeh we do but i cant say anything more, etc WELL, thats your choice.

Personally, and I think I talk for everyone that is negative, we would embrace the technology if it was HONESTLY a community network, but due to your "hidden" business and profiteering comments etc it is NOT a true community network. Yes you have to finance this etc, which no one has an issue with but the abusing of the term "community" for your financial gain is UNACCEPTABLE and I feel you may be FRAUDULENTLY presenting this to consumers.

Regarding the "experts".....mmmmmm most of us know the guys credentials, some are even core contributers to well known OPEN SOURCE platforms. So before we experience your technical abilitties, we are sorry but you fit into the "HOT AIR" club. You probably are technically very good, but seeing is believing.

Before you hit "quote" and reply, PLEASE DONT......(its weekend and I am sure your time can be better spent elsewhere)...... rather do us all a favour and go out there and prove us all wrong and get this network running. If you want input from the WUGS, well then invite people to test the network. If it rocks, then it is great and I can assure you that people will embrace it. If it fails, well then well done on getting this far.

Parting thought " If you want to run with the HOUNDS, dont p1ss like a puppy"

GOOD LUCK

I was looking at killing this thread but it's actually a whopper :)

You do know about the regulations around VSAT in South Africa too right? You gotta get it from Telkom or Sentech, and I know what they charge for 2Mbps VSAT. ;)

Comments re: this Iliyan, how are you going to provide internet access via Sat. ? Surely a 'VANS' license does not cover Sat. connection ? What if ppl join the network but don't require your 'amazing internet' you have to foot the bill for an expensive internet connection ?

Are you asking me how the Sat link is technically structured? I thought that I already answered that in one of my early posts... If you are looking for commercial or operational information, please join me in my venture (if you demonstrate that you can add value to it) and I will disclose to you all the commercial information there is, in greatest detail.

I also answered your second question many times - don't be lazy, go back and read it - everything we do is legal, we are absolutely obsessed with adhering to all regulations to the letter. Yes, we disagree with some regulations, but nevertheless, we make sure that we do not break any law. And that is what makes us different from the WUGs and most of the WISPs.

I am touched by you being concerned with some of the commercial aspects and risks of our operation  So to answer your question, we are not limiting the use of the Wi-Fi resources by the community members on a P2P level, we only charge for the services that are provided - initially by us, and in future by others. So, if one does not use our “amazing internet” (btw, I like your definition of our humble little service) then his traffic on the mesh does not cost as anything – he is still free to communicate P2P as long as he does not do anything illegal, of course. And we would not be cross with him for not buying anything from us - as soon as he decides that he wants to use our service, we will let him do so with gratitude.

Skillfully dodged!

Nice how you actually manage to avoid answering every question put to you.

Thank you for the complement.

Not every question, only the commercial ones, I must say.

Please point me to one technical question that I have dodged.

But then again, there were not many technical questions asked...

"Q So, what's about these rumors that I hear that this kind of wireless operation - Wi-Fi mesh kind - could not possibly be legal?

A They are rumors, usually spread by the "bullies" in the industry. Those rumors you hear are not groundless though - they are predominantly targeted at the many operators who operate highly illegal (non-compliant) wireless networks - that they themselves call "Wi-Fi" and/or "mesh". We - Wi-Fi Mesh (Pty) Ltd - the lawful holders of the trade names "Wi-Fi" and "mesh" - distance ourselves from such operators. We are bind by our own rules of operating strictly within the legally allowed framework and we require that anyone who is associated with us to abide by the same set of rules."

I didn't want to post a reply after such a slaughter but this caught my eye under the help page on the site.

You get guts and then you get plain good old risk takers.

There was no other comment or near sod statement that made me laugh but yet disgusted me in the same breath.

I'm sure everyone at some point in time had their thoughts set out to become a WISP since the launch of Wi-Fi, but to claim that you hold the "trade names" for Wi-Fi and mesh, legally or lawfully is just plain pathetic.

It's a pity South Africa is still a developing country, because I can't see that you would be able to register "Wi-Fi Mesh"/inc/(pty)ltd in the "US of A"

BTW - http://digitalmedia.co.za/ looks like your personal blogging site, am I correct?

Good Luck

kickass72za,

What HONESTLY is a true community network [your emphasis]?

Where did I made my "hidden" business and profiteering comments [again, your emphasis]?

Why do you have this strong feeling that I've abused the term community, can you give me a definition of the term that you've based your statement on?

And where do you see me presenting this FRAUDULENTLY to consumers [and again your emphasis]?

Did you perhaps get confused by mixing the terms "community" and "communistic"?

So what are you saying? What exactly made you disgusted and made you laugh at the same time? The fact that we have registered the above trade name first, or that we live in a developing country?

Or perhaps you think that our law is plain pathetic?

Jeez.

Folks as weird as it sounds, this whole argument is actually rather uncomfortable to watch in that it's totally unnecessary, childish, and just plain silly. please can we make use of all our apparently educated civilized selves in a more appropriate manner: try work together or something. some peace? lol.

heck if it means closing the thread as I previously suggested, then by all means please do that.

If this wifi-mesh project isnt meant to be, it wont be. Authorities will ensure the truncation of its continuity, and radio signals will not allow for 100mbps transfers. It will just happen like that because that's fate. Allow practice to bring about results and hence experience; don't try convince the guy if he's clearly not going to accept your arguments. At least, dont make it personal and attack him from every possible zone, because then obviously he's going to be defiant.

Since you are so keen on wikipedia...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Alliance

I see a trace of international trade law expertise here...

I am not an expert, but what my legal advisers tell me that by the virtue of sovereignty of all states in the world, all maintain separate trade registration systems. If one company wants to register a trademark (please note, not a trade name) then they have to do it in all countries that they are looking for protection. I guess Wi-Fi Alliance did not care about SA. Hence us being first and securing the tradename Wi-Fi Mesh. Wi-Fi Alliance also do not held the tradename rights for Wi-Fi Mesh in US - there is another company that does that. So, what that makes their law system - plain pathetic as well?

Iliyan

Good luck with your venture, I hope it is a success.

Any chance of a visit to view this technology working and do you have any coverage in the cresta area.

Where about are your offices as i have R150 sitting on top of my screen and would like to get 1 months access. Your website is lacking a bit in the detail.

Also can you share the SSID in the area so that i can check if i can pick it up.

Congrats you have a possible customer to grow the network.

Lets do it!!!!!

Oh yeh by the way, any chance we could start enforcing the use of WI-FI and mesh as soon as possible as i feel that if we dont react, we will be disadvantaged and i wont be able to convince the community around me that they are getting any benefit.

Can we start, actually if we work this cleverly, we could gain enough cash from the illegal use to build the entire network. Well done on trademarking, was clever way to create a cash investment for the community network.

Forgot to ask, are you open on a sunday as i really want to get going with this.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Kid, as I said earlier, your vicious attacks are uncalled for. Grow up!

Good day. i stay in Lynksfield and was wondering if there is coverage here yet ? looks like a good venture .

And kickass72za, where are the answers to my questions?

OOOppps sorry i did not answer your questions. I decided that the best way forward was to rather join your network and help grow the network.

I guess you also want answers to your questions like others did when they asked you questions.

Lets rather put the past behind and get this up and running.

Where are your offices so i can pay the R150 and get a username and password. I am hoping all the other guys also just decide to shut up and only comment after they have tried it.

Do you have any coverage in the cresta area??

Oh yeh i have an RB532 already on my roof so will i need any other equipment?

you should only need R2000 linksys with the std rubber-duck 2dbi antenna? sounds about right. don't see the RB's running that routing protocol.
