Annoying new firmware

I have a really low percentage signal and the new firmware doesn't seem to like that so it keeps searching for different base stations. Result : I get disconnected every few minutes until it figures out that it already had the best base station. Or...it picks up a base station in Outtamongolia and lights up like a xmas tree but doesn't connect to it because it's too far away.

Wish I didn't update my firmware :(

According to the "techie" guy at the (much-maligned) CUG meeting, the only real change in the new firmware is that it *should* now check for the best signal and check if it can connect. If not, it should discon, and look for the next best signal and so on. The way he described it was a "very primitive" solution and not optimum (it tries for limited period or something), and that they were pressurising IPWireless to update it correctly.

If the old version (4.2.1.8) was better for you, then downgrade and just lie to the orcs if they ask you what version you're using [;)]

LOL I think I will do that. Does anyone know where I can get a previous version? ProAsm's links don't work anymore :(

Nevermind, I found it backed up on a cd somewhere. :)

I "downgraded" but it doesn't seem to make any difference now. Will spin the dish outside tonight to see if I can pick up Helderkruin again...

Actually off the record, I find 5.0.1.60 a hell of a lot better and more stable than 5.0.1.62 which is now recommended.
62 does seem to have less packet loss but thats all.
Hell we spent months getting the NodeB's right and now they intoduce a Modem firmware that kicks you off, grrrrrrrr.
I have been trying to find out what the changes are in 62 but now that the top tech guy at Fastcomm has resigned its difficult to find out anything.

I have found, in my case, with my weak signal that varies btwn 0 and 10%, the new firmware looks for a new tower all the time. I've been known to be able to connect with no signal lights, but the new firmware doesn't like this. I can dial out with Mysignal with 0%, but with their dialer software it doesn't accept a 0% signal and all it does is search for better base stations. Unfortunately it keeps dropping the connection, probably because of the weak signal. It's just strange that the signal was stronger before I installed the new firmware and then just dropped. Doesn't change at all if you "downgrade", in my case.

Something also tells me that there is definitely something wrong with Horizon View, on node 3, because since Saturday it keeps finding the Fourways tower instead. Nothing changed here, the dish was still pointed in the same direction. But ja, you phone the helpdesk and there is never anything wrong and you are the only one with a problem.

I turned the dish back to Helderkruin last night and now have a 7/8% signal. Hopefully the software is happier now.
All the helpdesk can tell me is that I must contact NoWire so that they can come and "advise" me on what to do. *Sigh*

The speeds also suck, on both towers, international is non existent and local is like 5KB's. Lovely.

i wonder why he resigned :)

they need to be more open with info to be more credible ...

Jhbgirl, there's a new tower at Honey Hills that went live last friday. Might be clashing with your Horison View signal. About a month ago Brixton was also swamping the whole West Rand with ridiculous signal levels, but that was allegedly 'fixed'.

If we don't take care of the customers, maybe they'll stop bugging us.

I upgraded an hour ago and all is well.
13.7kB/s local, 10 International

Before and after modem readings were the same except that for the first time I noticed that the RSCP an ISCP signals were varying by 3-4 dBm's.

Im also connecting to Helderkruin for the last number of days. I dont know whether Helderuin's Signal is better, or whether Horizon nb3 has just disappeared like Helderkruin did to me 3 months ago. Sentech still can explain it and they dont come back to me, and they keep phoning me to ask if the ticket is sorted out... Hehe.. Thats just strange...

That's exactly my problem bHOLDher. Horizon, node 3, is gone. All I get in the same direction is tower 116, with up to 20% signal. According to the helpdesk that's the Brixton tower, which I know is more that 20km's away. I'd say they should "turn down" the broadcast on that tower. I had the same problem back in February with Brixton and it turned out back then Horizon wasn't even switched on yet. Our internet started to work "miracalously" about 3 days before we were ready to hand the modem back.

But anyway, since last night and an hour long phonecall from my husband to tech support, Helderkruin's signal strength has doubled. Amazing that.

OH, that explains why I started getting signal from Helderkruin again! Thanks! This is quite interesting - You phone support, and when you ask them whether they made any changes to the tower, they deny it. Then after you complain for ?how many hours?, they double the output...??? Ah that setting was checked: "Automatically decrease signal by 3db after 4 months"

But, even better - they stopped STUPHING around on Horizon, and for the last two weeks Ive been connected to Horizon without ever loosing a connection. At one point I had been connected for 160 hours or something - then I manually disconnected. This seems to be the best option for me. (Even tho the bounced signal is only 4% - its good enough)

As long as they don't do any "maintenance", I will be happy.
