Annual leave practices.

My wife has a leave plan like this.

They decide in January when everyone takes leave, they get two weeks of leave twice a year, must be taken in two separate slots of two weeks.
The reason for this is that they need to make sure that every person is covered while they are on leave and no one takes leave at the same time.

Sick leave and compassionate/family leave is the only way to take other leave.

I think most people will be surprised what is legal.

It is result of the failing of management to cater properly for occasions where several employees can be absent at the same time. It can also lead to employees abusing sick leave.

Unfortunately it's not always possible to duplicate or triplicate great employees and companies need to be able to plan what they will do when one or two of these employees are on leave

This is perfectly fine in an environment where you need to operationally plan and have staff-rosters/schedule. Think call-centres, shift-work or even production facilities where you need to have a consistent level of productivity. We even had this with some of the bigger banks in order to plan support and have continuity.

Perhaps people read too much into the actual email. If OP can provide some background about the industry of his company, it will probably make sense and I would expect annual leave planning to happen, where it is necessary to have certain key skills available at all time.

I think you guys read too much into the last sentence. To me it sounds that OP's business has some shutdown period over Christmas where the company shuts down anyway and as such it does not really matter if people are not in the office:
P.S For those who did not send us your planned leave for the year we take it that you are NOT going on leave during the year and you should only fill in a form in November 2015 for the Annual Christmas Holidays.

I remember something to that effect somewhere in there. It might have been removed. On the phone currently, will see if u can find it when I'm on a PC.

It used to be like that must have changed.
Apologies.

Must be a really small shop if the MD is sending out leave emails...

You can get all legal & employee rights on this stuff but the reality is that it's very industry & season dependent. Eg I know I can't take leave for 3 months out of the year. The other 9...there I could do an extended holiday maybe.

That being said that email seems a little harsh... Unless specific industry requirements apply. Eg you can't just have your heart specialist randomly go on leave... That needs to be planned months ahead.

Rigid leave planning can run into problems if there isn't a mutually agreeable time to take leave, although usually the sort of people willing to work somewhere that has such planning are willing to put up with it and accommodate the employer.

Probably including a lot of employers. It's remarkable how many companies large and small either don't know the law or ignore it hoping their employees don't know the law.

It's in system integration, mining focus. But I'm looking for a way out anyway so shouldn't be applicable for too long.

Yea, I don't plan my holidays or know about Thailand flight specials a year ahead... When I feel like I need a holiday, I usually applied for leave a month in advance. Which was fine until now.

TBH, with the issues in mining and all the strikes over the past years, I would think that your company must have felt it as well. Although I have never worked in that type of industry, I would think that companies like yours would need to schedule around those issues.

Play the same game when it comes to overtime. You need to be informed in a similar advanced manner and it needs to go through your approval.

Would be nice... For overtime, we need to ask in advance to work overtime...

Last week I just got home at 4:30, and got called back to work to go to a call-out 70km away. Only got back home at 21:00 that night, and no overtime.

Edit: Second time this happened, and somehow both times my gf planned an evening for us...so yea she hates where I work.
