it's getting a bit weird now.

i bought a very good used one earlier this year, and yesterday bought another 2.
the 2 from yesterday were yamaha demo / shelf units that went back to yamaha when newer models were released.
somehow this pair of obsolete units got lost in their inventory until friday.
landed the pair for the princely sum of R1500 (excl shipping from jhb)

the one is a ysp4000, and the other is a ysp1400.
the 1400 is a rather sexy looking thing.

the 4000 is a rather bland looking thing

then there are also a pair of jbl bluetooth speakers that are continually moved around like a pair of cheap whores

adding insult to injury the store room with a whole lot more stuff that i took over when my father died - although truth be told, the stuff in there is a whole lot more interesting than this lot.

methinks it may be time to have a garage sale of sorts !!

1. Are you deaf yet?
do you think think this might be a little too loud ?

2. What's Dax for?
3. Just why?
no frikking idea really - was a impulse thing.
the soundbars a really great, but i certainly did not / do not need an additional pair - but at R1500 for both it was a give-away.
i'll probably give one to a friend and keep the other.

the sound quality from the bigger one of the pair is really really good.
i did a quick "side by side" test with it against the 2 jbl speakers - chalk and cheese.
the jbl speakers sound clumsy and overbearing by comparison.

the smaller jbl retails at around R8k upwards.
the bigger jbl at around R6k.
each of the yamahas would be equivalent to R750

but now while typing this given the vast difference in sound quality, i think i'll rather offload the jbl pair and keep the yamaha pair

Yeah the JBL's are party speakers not really designed for accurate sound stage and presentation. They are good at what they are designed for though.

JBL portable speakers are for trailer park residents who need music outside their RVs to share with all their neighbours when they have a campside barbecue under their trailer awning, whilst Yamaha soundbars are for people who live in an actual brick & mortar house, when they have guests over for one of Hyacinth Bucket's candlelight suppers, and require Riparian entertainments piped through an upper class sound system... ;)

dear lord those two speakers came out at (todays conversion rate)

YSP4000 R33,000 (R12,600 then)
YSP1400 R7,200 (R2,800 then)

Yes that was 17 years ago but still, if a speaker sounded good then it will sound good now!

Very very good deal if they are all working 100%

So the Yamaha is for keeping up appearances?

I could understand jacking off to a V10 Formula one car at 16,000rpm and then downshifting... but a diesel truck????

jbl are quite rough sounding.
virtually all music played to bluetooth speakers is coming from either of 2 macbook pros, using vlc as the player.

no matter how much i tweak the equaliser, using either 2pass or not - i cannot get the sound how i prefer it.
most music is mp3 @ 320 kbps or aiff @ between 1411 kbps up to 3072 kbps.

its also time for some pruning - single tracks with a length of 6 minutes coming in at 147Mb, is lunacy.

its going to be a pain - the laptop i'm on right now has close to 3500 "tracks" - except there are huge amounts of mixes, and beause they are a single file, they are classed as a single "track".

be that as it may - yamahas stay - jbls go

Back in the day truck stops used to be a place for guys to get a little action, be it with other guys or girls

How new are the speakers? Is there perhaps damage to the membrane?

So the Yamaha is for keeping up appearances?
hardly
they are for the bedrooms & study.

lounge has martin logan, dining room has magnapan spkrs, running off a krell amp and preamp.
study has beolab spkrs.
most of the stuff was my father's - i took it after he died. despite my love for music, i draw the line at paying insane money of audio equipment.
a lot of it is in the store room, amongst it is a nakamichi dat player i've been meaning to haul out and muck around with.
i was actually foraging thru a box last night hauling out tapes

so no, a yamaha soundbar is not exactly the right thing to place on display.
yamaha for keeping up appearances is a little like driving around bishopscourt in a jetta with lowered suspension and freeflow exhaust, trying to keep up appearances in the land of the jaguar and aston martin

not so much the membrane as much as the brain.

they sound great for what they are.
the jbl things often left me feeling "fatigued" (not sure how to explain the feeling) after about an hour.
i find the sound they produce is somewhat overwhelming - at any volume.

very often i'll listen to music pretty loud late at night for hours on end using earphones.
if i did the same with the jbls, i'd probably look for a tall building to leap from after 2hrs

Ooooh, that 1400 is such a looker!

Whatever is happening with Yamaha, seems they are not as interested in the audio space anymore. Denon is kicking everybody's behind.
