This week, the Hawks swooped on ANC-governed Amathole District Municipality mayor Nomasikizi Konza for allegedly defrauding the municipality of about R6 million.

In June 2014 Buffalo City mayor Zukiswa Ncitha and her deputy, Temba Tinta, were arrested for fraud and money laundering involving R5.9 million, which was meant to be spent on memorial service events after former president Nelson Mandela died in 2013.

'Sell my house to pay for salaries': District mayor

A district mayor in the Eastern Cape tried to convince the council to sell off R43-million worth of land and properties including the mayoral house, to avoid running out of cash to pay staff salaries until the end of June.

The financial desperation comes after the municipality paid more than R2-million for a beauty contest hosted by its councillor Nanziwe Rulashe four months ago.

The municipality further paid R1.5-million to bankroll a boxing event organised by Rumble Africa in collaboration with TTT boxing promotions.
