Ok, I have moved over to the android side as explained before...

Last week I got meself a 32Gb Class 10 micro SD on the cheap and would like to load music directly onto this thing. Problem is after I copy the music over I can't see it in the player. The way I did this was create a folder called "music" on the card and then copy folders (in itunes structure of album/artist) of music over.

What am I doing wrong?

My phone is on 4.0.3 and I'm told this Acer version is almost vanilla.

Do you have a file explorer?
Can you see other stuff on the card?

Reason for the above questions is maybe the card is not formatted correctly for the phone.

What phone/tablet is this?

Well if it is MP3's and in any folder default android should pick it up, unless there is a file in the same directory as the mp3's called .nomedia

On the phone the card appears as sdcard2, and I can see the folders I copied over. I have now deleted everything for a fresh start.

Yup, best is to format the SD card via the phone, then you know it will work.

Another thing is that everytime I copy a song over to the phone windows warns that the file might not play on the phone? Even though it is mp3 and when I say copy anyway, the song plays. What's up with that?

That sounds like the phone is connecting MTP mode.?

The SD2 thing might sound odd, ie: They may have set the Media Player not to scan the sd2 mount.

2 things you can check:
1: copy the music onto the phone via WiFi instead of USB, like use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sand.airdroid to browse the phone and upload a song or 2. (That is if you can find the second mount)
2: try using another media player like Mimusic where you can specify where your music is under the settings.. Oh and its normally best to format the cards fat32.

In file manager on the phone I see,
-sdcard (phone memory)
-sdcard2 (microSD)

Now what I did just now was create a folder named MUSIC on the microsd and copy one mp3 file over and this file was picked up by the player.

My question then is does android not recognised the arist/album structure used by the likes of itunes or media monkey? Can it not read files inside folders meaning you can't organise your music by artist/album?

Android built in media scanner automatically finds all mp3's on the sdcard that is not accompanied with a .nomedia file regardless where it is. So in short your phone is showing abnormal behavour.

Edit: the media player(as others on the market) I linked above also does not follow Android's media library so it might still pay you to use that instead.

Thanks I will try that.

I see this "windows warning" isn't limited to just my phone, I see people with other make phones report it.

A further question - moving from Apple means that if I want to play music in a car, the m4a format isn't supported because car manufacturers don't make accessories other than Apple, so it means I must convert all my music back to mp3 to be able to play it in my car via cable (no bluetooth A2DP). Recommends on a good batch converter?

Wait, explain this one. Android at the moment does not support audio through USB (hence the lack of accessories for this), so you would be using a cable from the 3.5mm jack into the auxiliary input, correct? If so, you wouldn't need to convert your music back to mp3.

However- if you must, Freemake Video Convertor will do. Don't be fooled by the name, it kick's Handbrake's ass.

My Acer ics phone plays audio via usb, in a car.

Trying to understand how this works. Does it pick it up as a mass storage device?

Same here, not sure how this is possible when Android as a whole has not had this enabled until JB? And even then, OEM's have not built this feature into the ROM's...

It says E350 on the car and when you click on it allows you to play music, it shows the album, artist & track title of the song. It appears the same as an Apple device does via that interface in the car.
