Hey guys,
Ive got a billion 5200, the router has been taken out ie. router seems to work fine, I can login to interface, the switch ports work but it wont sync and when looking at the device status it keeps going into "activation" status and then line state : "Down". This is the second time its happened to me, after the first one getting taken out i put in a surge protector and lightning protector ... but now my new router is doing the same thing ... do these things actually protect against lightning ? Anything else that can be causing my routers to keep dying like this ? second router in less than 6 months ...

Hi, what does the error log say? Are there errors in there? If so can you copy and paste some.
I've had some issues where the modem would drop but the error log determined that the line noise margin etc was the cause of the issue. If you state your line noise, Attenuation and line speed here we'd be able to help.

I apologise if you've already checked this yourself, but perhaps it will get the ball rolling

i think its probably the router .. I dont have the error cause ive already replaced the billion router ... its a 5200 .. But what I know is that the line state was down and the line attenution and SNR number where n/a, so i guess this was a modem issue ?

but while we are talking about numbers,
im getting
SNR 18 / 16
line attenuation 56 / 31.5
d/r 384 / 128

how are these ?

I think some would say your line attenuation is marginal, to the point where I think if you got a line speed increase you could run into connection problems? Hopefully someone will comfirm or correct me

anyone know if lightning protectors actually work ? Im thinking not ...

You line attenuation is very high. This will give you line drop problems.

If im you, i would take my router/modem to a friend that also has ADSL and connect it there...If it works you got a Tel Line issue

If your line state was down, its more than likely not your router but the line itself. I believe everyone is right though with your Line Att. Its way to high. and if you tried to upgrade to a 512 or higher line, you will never be able to sync at all for more than a few minutes at a time.

I posted this back in 2005, but its hidden deep down in the many posts. This is what you are looking for with regards to your line:

Noise Margin (AKA Signal to Noise Margin or Signal to Noise Ratio)
Relative strength of the DSL signal to Noise ratio. 6dB is the lowest dB manufactures specify for modem to be able to synch. In some instances interleaving can help raise the noise margin to an acceptable level. The higher the number the better for this measurement.
6dB or below is bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems
7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions
11dB-20dB is good with no synch problems
20dB-28dB is excellent
29dB or above is outstanding

Line Attenuation
Measure of how much the signal has degraded between the DSLAM and the modem. Maximum signal loss recommendation is usually about 60dB. The lower the dB the better for this measurement.
20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is very bad and will experience connectivity issues

Output Power
How much power modem (upstream) or DSLAM (downstream) is using. Maximum recommended is about 15dB. The lower the power the better for this measurement.
