Hi all,

I am trying to set my Huawei E220 up to work with Ubuntu Feisty. I have followed the steps provided in the other posts. Everything seems to work fine when dialing, except that the modem hangs up after a second or two.

Here is the output from running wvdial:
HTML:
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.56
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT*99#
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT*99#
CONNECT
--> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
--> Starting pppd at Tue Jun 19 18:27:50 2007
--> Pid of pppd: 6825
--> Using interface ppp0
--> pppd: >+
--> pppd: >+
--> pppd: >+
--> pppd: >+
--> pppd: >+
--> pppd: >+
--> Disconnecting at Tue Jun 19 18:27:52 2007
--> The PPP daemon has died: A modem hung up the phone (exit code = 16)
--> man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail.
--> Try again and look into /var/log/messages and the wvdial and pppd man pages for more information.

And here is my log messages:
HTML:
Jun 19 18:27:57 petrusp pppd[6830]: pppd 2.4.4 started by root, uid 0
Jun 19 18:27:57 petrusp pppd[6830]: Using interface ppp0
Jun 19 18:27:57 petrusp pppd[6830]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyUSB0
Jun 19 18:27:57 petrusp pppd[6830]: CHAP authentication succeeded
Jun 19 18:27:57 petrusp pppd[6830]: CHAP authentication succeeded
Jun 19 18:27:58 petrusp pppd[6830]: Modem hangup
Jun 19 18:27:58 petrusp pppd[6830]: Connection terminated.
Jun 19 18:27:58 petrusp pppd[6830]: Exit.

Any suggestions?

Well, pppd's error code 16 is the most meaningless error code ever seen ("The link was terminated by the modem hanging up."). This usually means that some level occurred at IPCP negotiation (my experience).

And here is my log messages:

Any suggestions?

I'd suggest several things:
- add the debug directive to /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial (you can get more info at /var/log/debug rather than /var/log/messages
- You could try this manager, the default config will probably work for you (as long as you change the username/password/APN/DNS in preferences :))

Thanks Pablo

I would really like to use the manager you suggested, but as I can't connect to the Internet, it is difficult to resolve all the dependencies.

I have been trying various methods and this is the closest I have come so far. Any other suggestions will also be appreciated.

Thanx.
