Another Eskom price hike?

except it's older-than-one-year fridges that do more damage than the geysers .......
 
I got rid of my ancient fridge a few months ago and got a new one from Teljoy ..... my bill went down R400 a month ;)
 
4 years old .......


Just make sure to keep that grate at the back very clean and it's should be ok.
 
my fridge is like 3 to 4 years old now :( i was planning on getting a bigger one anyway so might as well replace it. is it possible to install a permanant geyser for use 24 hours ???

As things stands currently:

Eskom is going to ask for 60%.

Nersa by law has to wait 6 months so that interested parties can submit comments and observation.

Nersa will wait the 6 months, but has already decided to give 40%.

They will also implement the Penalty Tariff structures that they wanted to implement in the beginning of this year, but didn't due to world and SA economic situations.

But, things might look different next year April.
Things will probably look better then than now,
so it could be more than 40%.

Power utility Eskom's proposed electricity tariff hikes would raise inflation, both directly and indirectly, by between 3.45 percentage points and 12.7 percentage points in the first year, putting pressure on the Reserve Bank to raise interest rates, an economist said yesterday.

The inflationary impact of the hike is based on electricity prices increasing by between 40 percent and 146 percent in the first year, to help fund the power utility's R385 billion capital expansion programme.

The proposed electricity hikes are outlined in Eskom's tariff application submitted to the National Energy Regulator of SA last month, and leaked to the media this week.

Looks like 40% is the minimum that Eskom are going to get.

Eskom said in its latest tariff increase proposal that average industrial tariffs for 2008/09 were 22c a kilowatt-hour (kWh), while average residential tariffs were 54c a kWh.

Why the hell must residential consumers subsidize industry?
 
Because residential customers are soft targets, unable to stand together and say no.

Whereas the industrial industry simply calls up the relevant workers union and tells the workers union that they will have to get rid of staff if electricity rates are raised. The workers union tells government to find somebody else to pay for the upgrades.

Too true, sadly so.

What the hell, with this, NHI, new property rates, etc me thinks we are all going to *** a bit.

Please remind me how many tax payers there are as a percentage of population?

15% of all our power goes to 4 aluminium smelters. And the SA public is paying for it!

As, apparently, it is too expensive to cancel these contracts, the government should raise a tax to recover the lost income. Something like 120% of the difference between what the smelters pay and what domestic user pays.

Such a step would either cause the smelters to shut down, thus removing the need for large chunks of the intended infrastructure upgrade, or it will recover the money to fuel the upgrade.

And for those saying that the fiscus will lose huge income, yes it might,but then it would also lose the huge loss caused by the cost of this income.
