A security guard who spoke on condition of anonymity alleged that thieves had stole gas cylinders containing nitrate oxide.

"As they were cutting open one cylinder, that's when things went bad.

"[The deceased] inhaled nitrate oxide and possibly died from that. Some inhaled it in their sleep," he said.

My chemistry is a bit rusty, but there is no such thing as nitrate oxide. The most likely gas is nitrous oxide. Even the BBC copy/pastes the same error, and the erroneous Boksburg link:

they were probably using a nitrate gas to blast holes with ,not sure how ,maybe in a sealed device ,its used in fertilizers and explosives ,most home made bombs are recorded as fertilizer bombs ie nitrates.nitrous would have them all lying on the floor giggling .

Ammonium nitrate is used to make fertilizer bombs.

Ammonium nitrate fertliser is a solid, not a gas. Nitric oxide is also a gas, but not produced in industrial quantities. Seems like just a typo.

The article says it is used to extract gold. I have no idea how this supposedly works. In Chemical Engineering this is certainly not a mainstream technique. Traditional extraction uses cyanide, which is not pleasant stuff, but is a liquid not a gas.

True. You get Nitric oxide (NO), and then also nitrous oxide (N2O) and also nitrogen dioxode (NO2).
