Another GPU question

Hi Guys.
I dusted off the old HP DX2300 . It has a P4 3.4 GHZ , 2GB Ram, 250W power supply. Board has 1 PCIe x16 slot. I would like to pop in a GPU in there . What are my options ( under R1K ) . Will be used for very light gaming by my son ( got a few pre 2005 games ) and some photo ( possibly video ) editing. Something that can run adobe lightroom.
Any suggestions on GPU and if I have to PSU ?

get something like a 370W psu and a gpu for the remainder. Should be able to get a decent gpu for those games for about R500
 
Thanks will do that. Can get a 400W for R400. Is there a difference between GT440 and GTS440 ?
I got a quote for R700 on a GT 440 .

Just make sure whichever you get is DDR5. There's a huge difference with a graphics card thats DDR3 and DDR5.
 
Sorry to Hijack the thread but I just need some advise, I have a spare 9600 GSO and I am thinking about putting it in my sisters PC, the PC is only for Office use and The Sims 2 Could the PSU handle it?

The PSU's Max output is 260 W and it a entry level mother board with a Dual Core CPU @ 2.5 GHz[forgot the model] ( not core 2 duo) thanks

You'd be taking a chance.
 
Which would u choose. 600w 2.2 or 700w 2.3 80 plus for R150 more. Both mecer brand. Will only run hd5670 soundcard and tv tuner . 2 SATA hdd. Sounds like overkill but want to upgrade mobo and chip at later stage.

Anyone ? I dont mind spending the extra buck but is there a diff between 2.3 80 plus and 2.2 that's worthit in the long run. And stupid question ... will a "overpowered " psu have a negative affect on your system ?
 
I won't buy a Mecer PSU to begin with.

Look at the Corsair CX series PSU's if your budget is limited, otherwise look at Corsair GS/TX or Antec HCG series power supplies.
