Hey all :D

So my brothers gf messed up her external hard drive somehow so I'm trying to help recover it. Basically if I plug it in windows detects it but it shows up as uninitialised in Disk Management, if I try to initialise it it fails due to a cyclic redundancy error. So can't really do anything like a chkdsk or anything to try fix all the bad sectors it probably has.

I've tried using @Active File Recovery/ @Active partition recovery and it can at least access the drive and has recovered quite a bit but I'd still like to now fix all the bad sectors so windows can see and initialise the drive again.

Any suggestions are free applications that can perform something like this on the drive even when windows is unable to initialise it?

Thanx in advance,
S1ght :)

perhaps contact HTC_Guy? he fixes hdd problems

PS: if you have recovered most of it why not format the drive completely? bad sectors cant's be fixed though, only skipped

Remove drive from external housing and install directly into the PC and then use Recuva or GetDataBack apps to see what you can retrieve from the drive.

Windows won't give me any options to format unless I "initialize" it first, till then only place I can see that windows detects it is in those @Active programs and the Disk Management (Only in Windows 7, Windows XP doesn't even see it there)

Will take a look at GetDataBack thanks :)

If you really want to get the data back badly and no other (costless) option works, I would really recommend trying these people:
www.cssi.co.za (Computer Storage Services)
They helped me out once and they really have the best service I've ever seen from any company!
Good luck ;)

If it's a Seagate 7200.11, I can fix the error which occurs on these drives.
