Well, not sure if it's a netgear problem or not. The problem i have is that whenever there is lightning or thunder around my internet connection keeps dropping. It will stay up for a few minutes and then drop again. Then as soon as the weather clears, everything is as right as rain (no pun intended!! :) ). I've got a netgear dg834g router, but am not using the wireless.

I've been on the phone to telkom and they have tested the line and can't find any problems whatsoever. I was even on the phone to the techie when the line went down once and he said that he did notice a slight change in the attenuation/ noise margain (can't remember which, maybe both). But that they are both still well within range.

Part of the reason i think it's the router at fault, is that whenever the adsl line drops, the whole router resets, which kills all communication between all the computers on the network (obviously).

I'm battling to get hold of duxbury tech support so i can't ask them anything. I've heard from one other person who's got the same router and he said that he's had the same problem but all the time... not only just during bad weather. He downgraded his firmware which fixed the problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions or similar problems??
Thanks!!!

I just don't see how the whole router (lan ports included) would reset when there is noise on the line. My logic tells me that if there is too much noise on the line (or whatever the cause is) is would only disconnect the WAN or ADSL connection and leave the rest up and running.

Firmware V1.05.00 - the latest one out excluding the newest beta version.

Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048kbps 512kbps
Line Attenuation 49db 26.5db
Noise Margin 16db 20db

A funny thing is that i was asking him what values he had for line attenuation and noise margain, and the line attenuation figures were TOTALLY different. The noise margain figures he had were slightly different.

Thanks adlo!!

Yeah, the attenuation is quite high, but still within usable range.

I downgraded the firmware to 1.04 and so far so good. There was plenty of lightning etc in the air tonight and it still hasn't dropped since the downgrade.

Thanks for the help adlo!!!

I used to have the same problem on the dg834, and thought it was related to that. The dg834 got zapped by lightning a little while back, so i got a dlink504T, and thought the problem would go away. Nope. Exact same thing like your problem with weather happens. So its not the router. If i knew it wasnt the router i would have bought the dg834 again since the dlink config interface is terrible compared to netgear one.

The best firmware for the dg834 i found was the Firmware a1.03.07 beta i found here: http://www.htff.co.uk/netgear/index.html
It would keep the connection to the exchange wayyy longer than the other firmwares.

Stable firmware

The new(ish), but unreleased 1.10.10 firmware seems to be the most stable firmware for connections that keep dropping. You can even try 1.10.08 if 1.10.10 doesnt work for you...

You can get it from

http://www.longview.eclipse.co.uk/netgear/

There is a bug ? It listens openly on a few ports.. however, adding an addition deny all (log?) sorts this problem right out
