Another NHI headache for Ramaphosa

Definitely in SA. We have single skin specialist in my town. 8 months to a year waiting time before you get in to see him. A neurosurgeon in a local hospital has a 4 month waiting time for non-medical emergencies. The wheels are coming off slowly and we do not even have the NHI as yet.
We might be living in the same town. 1 year to get an appointment at the dermatologist.

Except we are a third world country with far less specialists and getting fewer every year.

"Were" is correct .

I agree with you. It will hit South Africa a million times harder than the West. Why do you think Zimbabwean elites and politicians flew to UK, Europe, China, Russia and the likes for procedures? Why do you think some of our politicians are already doing exactly the same?

It is game over for South Africa. Those staying will have shortened life spans. And probably for the better too.

"We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle." (attributed to Churchill)

Our government puts way too much faith in tax (if there's anything left after all the feeding at the trough).

I do not think the government puts any faith in tax. They already know it dried up. Just look at the desperation from SARS. This is merely propaganda to show some image that the country is doing 'fine'. The NHI is only an attack on private medical aid contributions. This is the money they need to enrich the cronies.

I think their biggest draw card is the fact that all their hospitals are starting to crumble. They need a system where they can refer everyone to to a hospital/facility in the private sector.

Perhaps it's time to start researching sorcery and energy healing.

That is not what is going to happen in the NHI. Private medical care is not catered for in the act. They are no provisions for private doctors, private hospitals of private specialists. What I know so far is that the ANC plans to purchase a handful of private hospitals and the rest will close down.

or more realistically, if you want to live a normal life and provide the same to your family, start working on urgently leaving the country.

And there might even be an opportunity this year to apply for refugee status for those without dual nationality.
