He can get a Subaru forester for R 60k if he shops around

And it won't fit the following of his requirements:

NOT a tiny city/hairdressers car
Reliable
Economical
4 doors
Well built
Lowish mileage

Don't think it's possible to satisfy all those requirements for R60K.

From the requirements, it sounds like you don't want a R60K car :)

I realise it'll be a compromise... And a Subaru Forester with 500k on the clock is better than a brand new Cheverolet Spark in my book.

And trust me anything worth 60k is a massive step up from my current car.

So after much searching I got myself a 2005 Fiesta 3 door 1.6L for 60k

Now for insurance, any advice on who's good and who to avoid?

DO NOT BUY FROM RIGHT CARS! Had a mate that worked there tell me about what they do to those cars... They pass roadworthy while it's parked there and mileage is turned back on some of them. Plus it's like a prison when you go there to check a car out

I was about to post the very same thing. That horrible BMW X5 I went to look at a couple of months ago was from the very dealership. Good gawd no. Avoid that place like the plague.

I phoned them about an audi, they said there is no manual or service history, when i questioned them futher they said all there cars come from auctions. I'd stay well away from them.
