Hi , as you might have read I will be coming back to SA in a few months , but keeping up with the news.

Here is my proposal I am considering , would welcome comments and suggestions.

The plan is not to be economical but to combine economics with the comfort of not sitting in complete darkness as and when eskom decides to switch off.

STEP 1.

I am considering 4 x 250w / 300w solar panels , 4 x 100Ah batteries , 6am Mppt charger , and 1000w pure sine inverter for the light circuit as well as 2000w for one plug circuit ( this one runs lounge , 2 bedrooms , and the study ). The idea is to have half normal living during load shedding.

Also during the day, the panels should charge the battery , as needed , then power the house requirements like fridge etc. in the evening if there is electricity the house runs of the mains , if no power then the circuits mentioned above run of the batteries.

STEP 2.

Currently from what I can see the average monthly electricity bill is R2000 of which approx R600 is fixed and rest is consumption. If I install a prepaid meter , is the charge per KWh similar to post paid , but with out the fixed charges ? The idea is to only use the electricity from the grid when needed.

Would appreciate any thoughts / comments / suggestions with this setup.
