Another which car advice thread...

The problem with today's cars is that you have to sacrifice something along the line, whether its fuel consumption, space, extras, service plans, looks and resale value. like i said it all depends on the person and their needs.

For me there is only but one, the Ford Fiesta 1000cc.I had the pleasure of driving one for two days while I was waiting for my new car. Bloody amazing, I can't believe that a small engine could be such a thrill to drive. Buy it you wouldn't be sorry.

What about a Hyundai i20 or i30? I recently drove the i20 when I took my car in for a service and it really is a nice drive.

The problem I have with Hyundai and Kia is their next models of the same car is always a radicle redesign. So if you have the model before the current you look like a tool. Like all those people driving in those ugly round ix35s.

Call VW what you like but that polo design has lasted 10 years with minor facelifts and still looks the part. The last model picanto looks like an old cheap shopping basket.

While I'd love to have a look at the clio I promised myself I wouldn't touch another Renault, Citroën or Peugeot in my life.

The 1l Fiesta is becoming more tempting, concerned with the turbo and it being a petrol though.

Still a tad more inclined to the 1.2 blue motion, thinking it may be a bit sluggish though.

I can get either in the R180k region it seems but I would still like to be closer to R150k as this car is purely to do kms.

Kia Rio Tec? Ford Figo?

I have a Citroen DS5 THp200 sport and have done around 27 000km in less than a year with it, so far nothing has gone wrong
My wife has a DS3 and has done about 17000km from last year November, also running strong

May seem like low mileages relatively, but take into account that its been done in a short space of time

All manufacturers have much better reliability than yesteryear

I'll accept that reliability improves with time, I've just had 5 very bad experiences (Clio, Megane, C1, 2x 206's) personally and in my immediate family that I'm not inclined to look any of these manufacturers.

the best and most sensible advice I can give you is move. petrol price is going to go up and up, god forbid if etolls come into play

Moving isn't an option, just did that in November to be closer to the support structure required for a little one.

Ok, so after all that, lets break this down! Based on a quick search I can get one of the following near R180k without any negotiation:

VW 1.2 Bluemotion
VW 1.6 TDI Comfortline
Ford Fiesta 1 Ecoboost

Overall the 1.6 TDI seems like the best bet and is almost as economical as the other 2.

As long as you didn't reach that conclusion based on facts, figures and stats.
Who buys a car by comparing a selection of stats?
