I know these are getting old, but actually have the money to buy now and need some assistance ^_^. I have decided not to go for a high spec expensive car but rather a 2 year run around (which I'll trade in and get something nicer).

I am however looking for some luxury in the 80k region (Up too 100k max but that needs to be a bargain),

Looking for

Leather
Electric Windows
Some oomph
Style.
Smallish (coupe preferred) no sedans
Preferably 2006 or newer but negotiable as well

Only car in this range I could find was the Alfa 147-
Only problem there is reliability (Pulled up some old threads from here)
Granted I will only buy from a dealer and fork out the 6k for a 2 year warranty.

Thoughts?

BMW E46 325i Coupe? Specced very well, and I'm sure you could find one for 100k. Reliable cars and a fair amount of power that should keep you happy for 2 years.

So you're looking for... a car?

Hmmm not sure what the point of this comment is .... yes... I am looking for a car - As for BMW - I thought about it - but no, for some reason I have always hated BMW. Yoo see- this is why I battle so much

Rather look at the Civic. Your budget is a bit tight for your 'requirements'.

If you look at a 2006 Honda Civic sedan 1.8 vtec VXI (the VXI is important), you will get all of that for under 100k. It might be a sedan but it still looks awesome. I am hopefully getting mine soon.

Here is an automatic one on autotrader: http://www.autotrader.co.za/makemodel/make/honda/model/civic/caryearrangeszar/2006/caryearrangeszar/2007/stock-item-id/at8a6bb5a43731399201374b0f254f3edb/advert

Specs for the car: http://www.um.co.za/specifications/honda_civic_1_8_i-vtec_vxi_4-door_at_%282006%29.aspx

Also instead of the 6k warranty go and look at this: http://www.hollard.co.za/motor-xtender-levels-of-cover

Hollards cover ranges from R99 to R399. Depending on the car and the option you choose.

You can look at replacement/maintenance costs for the civic here: http://www.kinseyreports.co.za/2007_kinsey_report.htm . Under C-segment cars.

Thanks for replying but 2006 and up and price is over 120k - also looks boring (although I know looks are a perspective) not my style

Well with a drop and sunroof they look decent but I get your point.
Golf 4 Gti?
The BMW is actually a great option, could possibly pick up a 330i for that money although not a coupe.

Renault Megane Turbo?
Opel Astra GTC?

I'll check out the civic vxi. GTC's in good condition are all over 115k, Golf 4 is ugly as sin and hardly goes, I agree QuickSilver, I am asking a lot for little, but the Alfa 147 does fit the bill doesn't it especially with a warranty and service plan.

Can we get some reasons why I SHOULDNT buy the alfa - (With warranty)

Because it is an alfa. Haha. Look at the Civic, it has everything you want + more. There is a hatch for it but you wont find one under R100k

Yeah I have looked at both (Been looking at cars non stop for 3 months) the VXI is a nice car - but its freaking huge - coupe is pretty important on my specs list :P

Might still consider the hatch version of I can find one for 100k, refrigerated glove compartment ftw

Actually Fiesta ST and mini cooper s are my personal alternatives to Alfa - Mini cooper s having to take a large dip in year to make it a similar price

The problem with the 147 is that it was hit and miss. Some gave issues, others didn't. I love my Alfas but i would be weary if the reason you are buying a car is because you just want it to work. If thats the case, grab a corolla. If you want a love affair, including tthe good and bad, grab the Alfa.

But you haven't really provided us with specific details to help. How old is the 147, kms, how much warranty left, which 147?

Oh, and if you have questions regarding the 147, head on to the Alfa Owners forum and go to the South Africa section. Loads of people who love Alfas willing to answer questions.

Thanks for a fairly comprehensive reply-

If you read earlier in the thread I state - Will be buyong from a dealer - 2 year warranty a MUST - only plan on keeping while warranty is valid.

Will be 2006 or newer
Will have under 100k on the clock.

Also probably the 1.6

although the 1.9jtd looks to have a bit more oomph

With the specs you want and only R80 - R100k you are going to need to take a sizeable risk to get something that you fancy. Its not as bad as I say but just have R15k or so on standby in case something goes wrong. Most cars will be 100 000KM or so and a major service with new disks etc will cost more than half of that.

check for cars which are, well notorious (well used to be), for their low resale value ie citroen, renault (early 2000 models), alfa and peugeot. if researched well there are actually some great cars to be found, and some are as good as toyotas etc
