Due to unforeseen circumstances my Samsung 51 inch plasma has to be replaced. Initially I wanted a 55 inch Smart TV, preferably Samsung again. But now there are other makes which has more value for less. And I'm not sure which type of TV I should be looking at. Full HD, LED, uHD, etc?

I don't have a big budget, approx. R10k.

A few must haves are a decent built-in media player and wi-fi capabilities. Are there any disadvantages of getting a Full HD Smart TV now? Or should I stretch the budget for ultra HD?

I have heard some good stuff from the new Hisense Tv's, and now with the standard 4 year warrentee it looks even more attractive. What about Sinotec?

Any advice would be appreciated.

There is a long wait before 4k (UHD) becomes a reality, DSTV wont be in 4k for about 5 years (they are not even looking at it right now), There are a few Netflix US titles that use 4k (probably 20) and you gonna need 20mb/s + Internet to watch in 4k.

So pretty pointless to get UHD.

Full HD runs at 1080p which is where the technology is right now so that's a good bet.

Now should you get a smart TV, I say no save the money and buy a decent streaming device/PC that connects to Full HD TV (this also leaves room for a better quality TV). I bought a fancy Smart TV and don't use any of its functions, I ended up using an old pc and wireless keyboard to do all my streaming because a PC has no limitations like all other streaming devices.

1080p on a 10mb/s line is stable which many South Africans can get now.

Before looking at any streaming services make sure you do research on KODI and the apps it provides.

I found playing different formats (MKV, MP4, AVI etc) Samsung TV's can play the most by quiet a large margin but not everything.

You can easily get a Samsung Ultra HD 48" for R10k.

I got one of those.

It's awesome for remote play so I'm able to stream via wifi to it directly from my PC or phone without needing extra cables etc.

The netflix app is built in and works pretty well over here, but overwall a good tv. Probably not the best, but works cool for tv, streaming and gaming on my ps4 and it was on the cheap.

So this is what I'll be getting.

I'll wait until I get my ADSL going first before looking a a Smart media player. I probably won't get higher speeds than 2Mb. For now torrent downloads and DSTV compact will have to be good enough.

I have to get 2 more TV's by year end. A 43" & a 40". Those will probably be Hisense or Sinotec and I'll make sure at least 1 is a Smart TV.

New 2016 model TV's should be released round about this time.

It shouldn't matter if you are sitting far... I have a 60Hz monitor for my PC though... no problems there.

You won't be playing any FPS games on your TV right?

No, I have a PC for gaming.

This TV is purely for media content, no gaming. If I had to guess the distance between TV and couch in the new place I'd say it's about 2m-3m.

I either have to go for a 55" FHD or see what 4K TV I could get for R10 000 - R12 000. Reading through all the threads I'm even more unsure as to getting a FHD or 4K TV... I already ordered my Fibre line so internet is not an issue for streaming.

At that distance? I'd definitely go for the 4K tv.

See the attached pic, that's a pic of the living room on the Private Property add.

Looks like 3-4m now?

EDIT: Not a big fan of projectors tbh.

Where you going to put the TV though? You would have to shuffle the furniture around.

Maybe you haven't seen the quality of Home Theater projects. :)

The image is of the add on Private Property, those are the current tenant's furniture. I've got my own decent furniture.

In the bottom left hand corner of the image you can see their TV cabinet with the remote's on, the TV will be mounted in the center of the wall which you cannot see in the image.

I'll take a proper picture when I go take some measurements.
