Anthropic pulls access to Fable 5

Anthropic disables powerful AI tool days after release

Anthropic PBC said it is complying with a Trump administration directive to suspend foreign nationals' access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial intelligence models, and is subsequently disabling the tools for all users, including those in the US.

"The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees," the company said in a statement.

Was wondering what happened there. Thought we hit the date that they initially said they were going to pull access.
 
This also illustrates how Europe is so reliant on the US. Still haven't developed a LLM which can compete with Anthropic, OpenAI or Google/Alphabet. They'd rather regulate it! It should be a great source of shame for Europe.

Well, there is also China. At this time, I like Anthropic's models the best, as well as OpenAI's. Each has their strengths and weaknesses, but hey. Frontier models will always have their government lock up, but we might have reached a threshold where governments will start to limit access to national security and more so intellectual properties. AI is not a tool anymore, it is a resource. It is not the "A", but the "I".
 
Competitors should drop more advanced quantized models. Some are really good now, and I am having a good time with Gemma 4 12B QAT (and Qwen models). Progress is being made, the tech stacks are improving, and is compatible with most new existing archs and pipelines. This will speed up the race as to what LLMs are publicly available in the cloud. Unless governments start to clamp down on localised AI/ML and hardware, which they are already doing, but more aggressively.

The question is, at what point does the AI race restrict us normal people to advanced technologies? Pricing is already a broad restriction on access to higher-end hardware. It isn't only the tech companies, it is the governments as well.
