Are there any experienced Java Developers out there? Especially in Durban? There seems to be such a skills shortage. My company has been looking for someone with experience for a few months now. The only CV's we get are from people just our of university/studying, who may of done some Java in their degree/diploma. But no one with any "real" experience. If anyone knows anyone looking for a Java Development position in Pinetown let me know ;) We primarily develop web based applications.

Give them a chance and train them. You guys aren't doing the skills shortage any good by tossing aside our graduates ;)

We have hired 2 already, and training them up. Unfortunately, to get them to the level we need will take ages, we can't keep hiring trainees/graduates, otherwise all my time is spent on training, and there is no one to actually complete the work/projects we need done. Straight out of university/studying, they barely know anything. No one teaches J2EE skills. Things like JSP/Servlets are barely even touched, if at all, nevermind technologies like Hibernate, Struts, JBoss, Tomcat etc. The best Java training company in Durban (Van Zyl & Pritchard), has also closed. Only in JHB now. *Sigh*. And to find a trainee who has the neccessary skills/attitute/independance to actually go out and learn the required skills themselves is quite difficult. And when they finally do learn these skills, they move to CT or JHB and earn 2 or 3 times more. *Sigh again*.

I think you just found the problem by yourself!

Skilled people won't work for peanuts, so for the money you're offering you'll always be stuck with grads, fresh from varsity... :D

I don't decide on the salary, im just an underpaid employee too  But I would rather live in DBN than CT or JHB. Lifestyle!

Problem is the DBN market. Generally, companies in DBN make less, so can only pay so much. You can't pay employees more than you are making off of them, otherwise whats the point. For a Durban market, our company doesn't pay peanuts! But compared to JHB, they do. But that's just how it's always been.

That's the problem, your company needs to pay a salary that is so high that people from Joburg will flock to Durban just to work there. What else is there in Durban anyway? :p
