Planning to buy one from a colleague and has around 76 000 on the clock

1. Should i worry when it approaches 90 000 ?
2. Is after market warranty really a must on these models after 90K?
3. Major and minor service price estimate?

Thanks in advance

Thanks Drifter, Do you by any chance know how much that costs if it has to be replaced?

Nothing to worry about man. It only has 90k on the clock. It's a diesel and just run it as it is. If the Turbo blows as per above post it's probably around R 10k for a new one at most. Won't break the bank. But should not happen for another 200k kms at least.

I think the 2011 model is the 3rd or 4th revision of that engine and has vastly improved in terms of reliability when compared with the older models.

If the car was driven decently before, and you also treat the car well, you shouldn't have any issues.

I own one - The biggest bonus is that they actually used the same engine in the F30 BMW - Shows how much they trust them.

Often can be repaired and doesn't necessarily need to be replaced.

1. I wouldn't worry probably until about 150k.

2. I have never owned a Diesel, but I feel that you'll never make up the cost of the warranty/plan in actual maintenance costs unless something catastrophic happens. Even if that happens you'll probably break about even. So I say no.

What I would do is if you have hte cash money to buy the plan (as in not adding it to your finance deal) put that money away and use that to pay for the servicing of the car instead.

3. I don't own a diesel so can't comment sorry.

You'll have people telling you that the turbo is going to pop. Ignore them, they heard a story in 2002 about BMW turbo diesels popping their turbos. That problem was resolved a long time back, and the 2.0 diesel is reliable.

Everything is wrong with it. Horrible vehicle!

What's your colleague's contact details? :P

Yes, they must be able to withstand extreme high heat and the impeller rotates at a couple of 100 000 rpm per minute.

You actually get turbos that has no Turbo lag due to flames being pushed through the turbo to keep it rotating. ALS

Insanely expensive systems

/off topic I know. Just a thing I discovered about turbos the other day.

Oh ok. Sorry, just curios. Most diesel cars are turbocharged yes?

Bought my 2011 320d with 50000km a month ago and couldn't be happier, especially after reading about this. Luckily the motorplan is active until end 2016 so I have no worries about anything going wrong until then.
